As the pace of life gets faster, boat owners in search of yachts like the Hampton 680 Endurance are embracing a more relaxed stride. Those in the fast lane want to make more time to throttle back and thoroughly explore the far-flung ports they dream about while powering through the workaday world. For those dreamers with a more global mindset, the 680 Endurance, a cruiser equipped to go the distance, takes you there at a luxurious and leisurely pace. It rounds out the Endurance line of long-range cruisers from 59 to 87 feet. Models in the Endurance line boast terrific fuel economy at slow cruising speeds with the option to run at higher speeds efficiently.
Hampton Yachts 680 Endurance SHE’S GOT LEGS: The 680 is based on a hull by naval architect Howard Apollonio that’s designed to be efficient across a range of speeds. It will run most economically at 8 to 10 knots on a pair of 930-hp Caterpillar C-18 Acert engines, yet if the weather turns and you need to power out of a tough spot, the Hampton will hit a top-end speed near 20 knots.
SOCIAL NETWORK: The Hampton’s ocean-going hull form supports a spacious and comfortable interior that showcases Apollonio’s expertise in the design of motor yachts large and small. The salon, for instance, is partially separated from the galley and dinette that are located forward of it, in the skylounge area. As a result, it can function as a separate living and entertaining area.
DINE AND UNWIND: Forward of the salon on the skylounge level is a large dinette on centreline that offers fantastic views. We like the electrically operated blinds on the forward windows that function to cut harsh sunlight. African cherry hardwood used throughout the boat has a beautiful, high-gloss finish. An optional floor plan puts the dinette to port and a helm station on centreline. It can be isolated from the rest of the interior with curtains for night navigation.
A SERIOUS MEAL: Between the salon and dinette is the galley. Even here, the builder incorporates details for serious cruising. For instance, the legs of the stools fit into cutouts at the base of the island counter to anchor them firmly in rough conditions. The stools won’t slide or tip over when the boat is under way. There’s also a sturdy latch on the door of the full-size refrigerator that keeps it from opening in a pitching sea.
CAPTAIN’S QUARTERS: Below decks at the accommodations level, a few layouts are available, including a four-stateroom/four head configuration that includes a large en suite master stateroom with king size berth.
TOP NOTCH: The flybridge has almost 20 feet of open space so it can accommodate a number of passengers. There’s plenty of seating and dining space, plus a wet bar and meal-prep area with barbecue. The area is protected with a hardtop canopy and an enclosure is available. Here, there’s more good detailing designed for bluewater cruising. To wit: Drains on the deck are seamlessly connected to overfills to prevent water from pooling topside.
HEAVY METAL: In the engine room, air intakes for the Caterpillars are located on the inboard side of the wide walkways to keep salty misty from making its way into the machinery. The area is heavily insulated and air conditioned, too.
TWICE AS NICE: Like the other Hampton Endurance models, the 680 is all about redundancy when it comes to the systems you need for serious offshore cruising. There are two of all of the things you really need, from fresh water pumps to depth sounders, GPS antennas and chart plotters. There are even two generators. Other notable features include a solid glass hull from rubrail to rubrail. The hull also features propeller tunnels and a keel of modest depth to provide protection without compromising its shallow five-foot draft.
SPECIFICATIONS: LOA: 21.4m (70ft 4in) * Beam: 5.69m (18ft 8in) * Draft: 1.52m (5ft) * Displacement: 46,901kg * Fuel capacity: 7,570 litres.
Hampton Yachts likes to say that its Endurance 680 is really two boats in one. It’s a seaworthy and efficient passage maker as well as a luxury yacht with generous living spaces tailored to spoil passengers. The 680 also showcases the type of thoughtful detail that serious cruisers rely on and appreciate. Chances are good this boat’s time at the dock will be limited.
