LARK is one of John Alden's finest designs the Sloop-Cutter Design No. 531, for Mr. Ralph Forbes, of Boston, MA. In 1932, Mr. Ralph E. Forbes of Boston, MA, commissioned the renown George Lawley and Sons to build S/Y Lark. George Lawley and Sons built hundreds of ships and yachts, most notably the yachts Puritan and Mayflower respective winners of the 1885 and 1886, America's Cup (and the fine sloop Lark). Emerson Forbes was the son of William Hathaway Forbes and Edith Emerson (daughter of Ralph Waldo Emerson). The Forbes spent many years of memorable sailing with their family and notable guests out of Naushon Island.
This is a two owner yacht that has been sailed by the Forbes family for 50 years. She is very capable at sea, racing and entertaining guests. In 1972, Captain Eric Little (a master shipwright), purchased the S/Y Lark, sailing her every summer in the Elizabeth Islands, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, and cruising Cape Cod. During the winters, Captain Little completed restorations including replacing a majority of the frames, floors, and planking.
This hull has 2-1/4" x 2" white oak frames with carvel planked 1-1/4" mahogany brought together with bronze fasteners. The transom features 6" by 4" mahogany planking. Her mast step has 8" by 4" white oak with four hanging knees. The keel ballast is done with 20,000lbs of lead utilizing 3/4" bronze keel bolts and a White Oak stem. In 2011 she had a carbon fiber rudder weighing 150lbs installed.
Their are 5 starboard bronze thru hulls, 3 port thru hulls and one engine exhaust thru hull.
The hull is finished off with an attractive red boot stripe.
The 44'4" feet by 10'9" of on-deck space features 4"x4" Douglas Fir planking on top of 1/2" marine plywood and coated with West System epoxy and 2 coats of beige non-skid Awl-Grip. The deck beams at varnished 2-1/2" x 2" White Oak. Safety is maintained by the stout bronze life-line stanchions.
Her proud Douglas Fir bowsprit is varnished.
The 6'4" standing height main salon has a yellow pine sole with 4 attractive bronze port lights. Accommodations for four people on the starboard settee near the FORCE 10 Model TT pro-pane cabin heater. Bronze inclinometer accents the bulkhead.
The cockpit is designed to be a central meeting spot on this boat and accomplishes that by providing elevated seating for 7 passengers plus the captain.
This portside galley has a large ice chest and features a gimbaled Taylor Model 041 pro-pane oven with 2-burner stove. The hand pump fresh water collect in the stainless steel sink.
The enclosed head compartment features an easy to maintain WILCOX manual head.
