Ever since she was launched 70 years ago, Betselma has been carrying sightseeing passengers summers out of Camden, Maine, and all the while, has had the best of care. Betselma is very yacht-like in looks and quality of construction despite her having a commercial lobsterboat heritage—and there’s good reason for this. Her builder and first owner was a professional yacht captain (who, with great care, also used Betselma for dragging scallops off-season). Ralph Wooster kept at it until 1970, and since them, the boat has had four subsequent owners, but has always stayed Betselma (named for daughters Betsey and Thelma) and has always operated out of Camden. She’s Coast Guard certified for carrying 26 passengers, but It seems to me that she’s worked enough. How about if she were to continue enhancing the same waterfront, but retire as a private yacht?
Inspection via recent bow and stern repairs and a condition survey indicates there’s major repair ahead, even for non-commercial use. The original galvanized fastenings have rusted and there’s deteriorated wood even though you’d never guess it to look at her. A new deck is one of the jobs mentioned. But it’s not too late; there’s still plenty of substance. She’s lying ashore now with garboards removed so that her backbone area can be examined.
Coast Guard COI and Documentation paperwork available for inspection.
