KONDOR is small enough get under way quickly, is easy to sail and single-hand when necessary – yet large enough to comfortably accommodate six or seven people, take a nap down below, and put together a decent lunch in the galley.  She is also very fast. The small aft cockpit is particularly interesting, allowing a captain to sail the boat without disturbing the guests.

She was built in 1947 at the Grimsoykilen yard in Sarpsborg Norway, to the design of Sigurd Herbern - a well-known Norwegian designer.  She is sail #W-20 of the  Scandinavian W-boat, or Skjebergboat class, made up of 40 sq. meter boats in the 1st half of the 20th century.  Herbern designed 3 of them, W-18-20.   She is also known as a “spidsgatter”, which is a generic name for classic, Scandinavian double-enders of this size.

KONDOR was her original name and her plans are archived at the Norsk Sjofarts Museum in Oslo.  She came by steamer to Buffalo, NY in mid-1950's, and remained in the eastern great lakes through three owners until the 1980's when a family in Rhode Island bought her. The histories from most of the previous owners are available.

KONDOR appears to have been very well maintained by all of her previous owners.  When the current owner purchased her in 1999 he did a major refit, replacing several planks, installing a new cabin sole, all new cushions, a new stove, new icebox, new hatches (including butterfly main hatch with beveled glass and forward hatch with light prism), new head, new propane system, new battery boxes, rebuild cockpit, new teak grates in cockpit, new tiller (rudder designed by RI naval architect in 90's), new mast step, new chainplates, new primary winches (custom engraved Meissner), and new main and #1 jib.  The spruce mast is a beautifully tapered foil section, with a round boom and all of the original bronze fittings.   There is a full and extensive inventory of accompanying gear.

She was pulled from the water after the 2005 season and has been in storage ever since. The archival storage facility at Artisan Boatworks is designed specifically for long term storage of wooden boats.  It is well ventilated and humidified – and KONDOR shows no signs of drying or plank shrinkage.  Survey available.
