The Capt Ben Pine is a superb example of a classic trawler designed by Ken Smith and the beginning of the Grand Banks excellent tradition. Her original name was Effie Jean, built by Tim McDonnell in Old Lyme, Connecticut, in 1961. She was custom built for Mr. and Mrs. Francis Goodwin II, who were transitioning from sail to power and desired an able and seaworthy vessel with a short sail rig for steadying and maneuverability in case of engine trouble. The boat was featured in the August 1965 issue of Yachting magazine in a detailed article by the designer with plans, photos and description of the boat, including comments by the owner. In 2007 she was updated and refinished by the Newman & Gray Boatyard on Cranberry Island, Maine, and purchased by a Connecticut family. Since then she has been cruising the East Coast from Connecticut to Maine each year with her knowledgeable and caring owners. Ben Pine is a comfortable seagoing trawler with distinctive lines and a classic design. She's a one-of-a-kind salty cruiser, we recommend highly!
This trawler was designed by Ken Smith and built by Timothy McDonnell of Old Lyme Connecticut in 1961. 1" Philippine mahogany planking over 1 1/4" x 1 1/2" steam-bent oak frames on 9" centers. 1 1/4" oak floor timbers 9" oc with 4 1/2" oak keel, stem, and deadwood. 1 1/4" oak deck beams 9" oc. Decks are teak over 1/2" marine plywood, 12" and 14" wide. Trunk and Pilothouse are marine plywood, tops fiberglassed. Aft self-bailing cockpit is 8' x 10' with a teak stern seat. 1 1/2" x 5" oak cap rails. Varnished mahogany transom. Fastenings are bronze screws.
Ford 4-cyl. diesel, 4-108, approx. 90 HP, 3:1 hydraulic gear. 1 1/2" SS Aquadrive shaft (w/thrust bearing U-joint) swinging a bronze 22x18x3-blade RH propeller with cage. FWC via heat exchanger. 2000 total hours (meter not working). Racor fuel filter. Single wet exhaust with muffler. 2-lever Positrol controls and Ultraflex hydraulic steering in pilot house, starboard side. Bronze rudder. Engine air inlet is taken from two 4" cowl vents on top of pilot house roof. Very good access and space around engine under pilot house sole.

Sleeps a total of 4 under present cabin layout. Aft of open rope locker forward are 2 vee berths, 6'4" long with green cushions. 4 drawers and 2 shelves and 2 opening ports with a 17x20" cabin top opening hatch with solar fan. Aft to starboard is the enclosed head with sink w/pressure hot and cold water, Raritan toilet with Jabsco macerator pump w/holding tank, and shower. Across from head is a full 19" hanging locker and shelves. Aft to port is an 8'2" full galley with portable alcohol stove and "Little Cod" wood stove, SS sink with hot and cold water, and a large deep Alder-Barbour ice box with freezer. 6 1/2' long Formica countertop. Drawers, lockers, bins and 3 opening ports. To starboard is a 6'3" table with 2 benches for 4 that converts to a double berth--all painted plywood with cushions. Bulkheads are cream, white ceiling, and varnished mahogany trim with a gray sole. All bronze cabin ports and pilot house have screens for good ventilation along with a cabin top opening hatch with a solar vent. Cabin headroom is 6'2".
Up 3 steps to pilot house, 6'3" x 7'3". Classic vertical windshield with opening windows provides excellent visibility. Starboard hydraulic helm has full panel and 2-lever Positrol controls with a classic brass binnacle. Sliding doors both port and starboard provide easy and quick access to deck. Behind helm is a fold-up desk and chart table. Headroom is 6'3" in pilot house. A very attractive, functional, and comfortable interior.
Through double folding doors aft is a spacious cockpit with full 18" teak stern seat. Below cockpit sole is a large storage area, 20" deep.
