Designed by Alan Wright, “SHIBUMI” is a 65 foot custom built twin keel composite constructed, ketch rigged cruising motorsailor with enclosed pilothouse specifically designed for comfortable, long term, bluewater cruising in remote areas. The vessel is built to heavy scantlings and layschedules for offshore cruising. She is an “all weather” “go-anywhere” vessel that can be handled by two people. Built in 1973 in Auckland, NZ, her current owners have upgraded and modernized her over the last 16 years, including a new teak deck, custom pilothouse configuration, interior layout and finishes, and mechanical systems. We have lovingly maintained her Gardner 8LXB Diesel, including rebuilding the complete fuel injection system in 2011, and her Hundested variable pitch propeller system which we rebuilt in December, 2011. SHIBUMI’s layout includes a master cabin and second guest cabin aft, a forward guest cabin, saloon, galley, and navigation station forward with a large pilothouse above the engine room. Her walk-in engine room and shop provide easy maintenance of all systems. SHIBUMI is in “sail away” condition. The triple fiberglass and double end grain balsa core hull is 2.5-3.0 inch thick to a depth of 9 inch below the waterline, then transitioning to solid glass approximately 1 1/8 inch thick. Decks are ¾ inch plywood double treated then 5/32 inch fiberglass layup and covered with ¾” inch teak planking. The original teak decks were replaced in 2002. Beam shelf carlines and deck beams all select New Zealand heart Kauri. All fastenings are bronze or stainless steel. The steel fabricated keels each weigh 5.5 tons with approximately 4.5 tons of lead. Each has capacity to hold approximately 170 gallons of fuel. Twin steel rudders and stainless steel shafts with protecting skegs. Cabin sides are thicknesses of 7/8 inch spinal solid core Rosorcinal glued plywood and 1/4 inch teak ply inside and glassed outside up to a ¼ inch thick on the turns. All tanks, water and fuel, are vented above deck level. The ship has a high capacity engine driven emergency bilge pump with five permanently plumed pickup positions selectable by manifold valves in the engine room. Virtually the entire bottom of the boat is tankage forming a “double hull”. In addition to the engine-driven bilge pump, there are two electric bilge pumps forward and two electric bilge pumps in the engine room with automatic float switches and high water alarms in each area. The alarms and bilge pump controls are wired to the pilot house. The twin keel design produces an extremely stiff boat. SHIBUMI rarely heals more than 12° regardless of the wind velocity or sail set. The twin rudders and the propeller are also protected by a skeg. There are two steering stations, one in the pilothouse, the other on deck aft. The steering gear was completely rebuilt in 2012 including rudder bearings and tubes. The entrance doors to forward and aft accommodations from the pilothouse are 1/4 inch aluminum plate and can be partially or totally closed. Lockable stainless steel grates provide an alternative secure ventilated closure for long term storage or insecure anchorages.

The owner’s aft stateroom has two oversized single berths, which are fitted with lee cloths to provide comfortable sleep at sea or at anchor. We lengthened the port side berth to 7 feet to accommodate tall passengers. Each berth has a fan and a 24 VDC reading light. Under each berth are four large drawers. The top of each berth offers access panels into more storage space. Between the berths stands a hanging locker. Adjacent to the port berth are two cabinets above and a bureau with five drawers. Adjacent to the starboard berth are three more cabinets. Ventilation includes two dorade vents, four ports, and an overhead hatch. Over the port side berth is the captain’s GPS, aft air conditioning controls, a carbon monoxide detector and emergency switches the ship’s horn/whistle and spreader lights. Two 110 VAC electric outlets above the port berty provide AC power access. Under the floor are three dry storage areas.
A combination 120 VAC and 24 VDC incandescent lights overhead illuminate the whole cabin. There is also a red/white night vision light overhead in the aft cabin and in the connecting access hallway.
The aft guest cabin has two berths, both with lee cloths. Four drawers reside under one berth, and five drawers and a hanging locker under the second. The bulkhead has an additional built-in storage cabinet. Light is provided by one 24 VDC reading light for each berth as well as a separate overhead red light and two overhead white lights for the cabin. Ventilation comes from one hatch, one port, one dorade vent, and two 24 VDC fans. 110 VAC outlets provide additional AC power points.
The aft head contains a GROCO full-size manual toilet, a sink and large corian countertop, a stand-up enclosed shower with a flexible shower head, and a Splendide 2000 clothes washer/dryer. Storage is provided by three large cabinets under the sink and four cabinets above it. An additional small cabinet is accessible beside the shower. The aft access door to the engine room is watertight. The single sheet vinyl floor is trimmed with teak. 110 VAC power outlets and light switches are bulkhead mounted. Overhead lighting is provided by 24 VDC fixtures. The aft head is ventilated by one hatch, one dorade vent, and one port. A 24 volt fan provides comfort while using the head.
The forward cabin includes two berths, one with a lee cloth, a hanging locker, four drawers under the lower bunk, a seven drawer cabinet aft of the lower berth, three other storage cabinets, and a full length mirror on the door. There are 24V and 110 VAC overhead lights, a separate red night vision light, two 24 VDC fans, and 110 VAC outlets. Two ports and one hatch provide ventilation.
The forward head on the port side contains a sink, pressurized hot and cold water, it's own 5 gallon hot water heater, full size hand-operated GROCO head, shower with a water-saver nozzle, and 24 VDC lights and a fan. There is under the counter storage and a drawer and a double cabinet over the sink.
The saloon contains the interior navigation station, galley, and dining areas. There are eight ports, and four dorade vents, and two hatches. Regional overhead lighting is controlled by dimming switches. There are four electric outlets for 110 VAC and four 12 VDC outlets.
The navigation station contains all electronics other than those in the pilothouse, a repeater for the navigation instruments, and a B & G fluxgate compass. Instruments include two Furuno DGPS/WAAS, one Furuno Navtex, one ICOM DSC VHF. One ICOM 710RT SSB/Ham radio, one Furuno Fax30 weather fax. A liquor locker and chart bin reside under the main nav station. The nav table opens for storage. There is a cabinet below the nav table and a floor to ceiling set of cabinets beside it. The main 240/110 VAC and 24 VDC and 12 VDC electrical panels are next to the nav station on the port side next of the primary, forward entrance to the engine room. The floor mounted nav station seat swivels.
The dining area has a table for six which can fold and also lower to convert to a coffee table. The saloon also features a settee, 20 feet of book and magazine shelves, storage cabinets, and a forward set of speakers for the stereo. Under all dining and lounge settees are large storage spaces.
The U-shaped sea-galley provides great handholds and enormous storage. The galley contains a double stainless steel sink with a pressurized hot and cold freshwater faucet and a pressurized saltwater faucet. The propane Seaward Princess stove has three burners and a two rack oven. The four cubic foot sealed dry storage box under the stainless steel sink provides storage for baking components. 10 large storage areas reside under and over the galley sink, the Corian working counter, and the stove. A microwave sits to the left of the double sink. The trash receptacle is a large rollout drawer. A overhead galley hatch, 24 VDC fan, dedicated over-the-stove exhaust fan, and a port over-the-stove provide ventilation. Four 110 VAC outlets provide power for galley equipment such as food processors, and blenders. Fresh food is stored in a three rack refrigerator box measuring six cubic feet and a three rack freezer box measuring six cubic feet forward of the galley.
Complete waterproof protection from wind, water, and adverse temperature is offered by the large pilothouse whose aft third is enclosed with flexible, zippered vinyl curtains. Companionways forward and aft are designed to be closed and locked with either 1/4 inch aluminum plate doors or stainless steel grates which allow maximum ventilation. Fishing rod storage is available behind the port seating.
The pilothouse steering station on the starboard side faces a swivel helm seat with a foot rest and a fan for the helm person. All sailing instruments, radar, hailer/foghorn, VHF/AIS, autopilot, rudder angle indicator, propeller controls, engine controls and instruments, and a navigation systems electrical panel are accessible from the helm seat. Both 12 VDC and 110 VAC outlets are available. Two overhead Balmar hatches allow the helm person to inspect the sails and ventilate the pilot house.
A large settee which can expand into a double berth runs the length of the port side. Four large cabinets aft on the starboard side and one forward on the port side provide ample storage space. Stereo speakers for the sound system are mounted forward on each side of the pilothouse. A TankTender provides the status of the two forward water tanks and the two forward diesel tanks.
The model VP4-FROA Mark II Hundested propeller pitch is set by a combination of engine RPM and exhaust temperature. Its range is “O” or flat pitch to full feather. A complete set of three spare blades reside onboard. The propeller and shafts were removed and completely rebuilt in 2012 with the installation of a new inner shaft, FROA bearings, and stern bronze shaft bushing.
Three voltages are available: 110 VAC, 24 VDC, and 12 VDC. A 240/110 VAC isolation transformer allows different shore side power hookups. All AC motors (refrigeration and air conditioning) can run on 50 or 60 cycle power. Both generators feed 240 VAC power to the AC electrical distribution panel. Both the 24 VDC, 12 VDC and the 110 VAC distribution panels contain circuit breakers on all circuits, voltmeters, and ammeters with selector switches for various power combinations. There is a secondary 24 VDC circuit breaker panel in the pilothouse for navigational systems. A Newmar 24 VDC/12 VDC 35 amp converter supplies 12 VDC power for the SSB radio and other electronics. Aft Lazarette wired for dive compressor. Generator rebuilt in 2016.
Shore power of 50 amp 240 VAC is supplied using a standard power cord. A 240/110 VAC Charles 12KVA International Universal ISO-transformer allowing use in Southern Pacific, Southeast Asia and Europe. There is a Guess Galvanic isolator.
There are two generators: a 1986 Westerbeke 7.7 model WMD 8 (s/n 32409) with remote start panel and controls and a 8KW generator which is belt driven from a jack shaft on the Gardner and set to use at cruising RPM. The generator batteries are separate, charged by the generator or a small 12 volt charger.
There are four deep cycle batteries for the ship's power and four to start the main engine. The batteries can be paralleled for greater engine starting power or a larger amperage reservoir for the ships needs. Batteries are charged by the engine’s alternator for engine and ship’s battery banks, or by a Freedom 25 Charger/Inverter that will also charge both banks.
The Gardner 8LXB engine (s/n 180147) is a very reliable, low RPM, long-lived engine. The manufacturer recommended oil changes every 600 hours and overhauls every 20,000 hours. The engine develops 176 BHP at 1500 rpm, but cruising RPM is 800. At 5,000 hours in 1987, the heads were removed to clean carbon and grind valves. At the same time, the heat exchanger, oil coolers, and bronze and carbon steel salt water pump were rebuilt per the manufacturer's specifications. In 2003, the heads and exchangers and raw water pump were rebuilt again. In 2011, the fuel injection pumps, governing systems and injectors were rebuilt. There is a spare Gardner starter and eight spare injectors, complete instructions, and special engine tools. Other features include Morse controls for both steering stations. It has a built in oil and fluid change pump system.

Main engine, emergency and fresh water piping is hard drawn copper tubing connected by brass fittings or brazed bolted flanges.
The fuel system draws fuel from 2 forward hull tanks and 2 keel tanks through a manifold to a 20 gallon day tank by either an automatic 24 VDC pump or a back up hand pump. The fuel is filtered three times before it is supplied to the engine. Fuel can be transferred among any of the four tanks or recycled to “polish” the fuel in any one tank.
