Last Boat Set Up by Tommy Rybovich Hull 77

Legendary ...Glassed Tripple Diagonal Planked Mahogany Hull

Although the Rybovich family was the first to develop what would be commonly referred to as a “sport-fishing boat,” the brand stood for a kind of quality, craftsmanship and attention to detail that transformed boat building into an art form. Thus the Rybovich family never built more than five boats a year. The father handed over the business to his three sons who basically manned the entire operation. John took care of the business and sales end of the yard, Emil worried over the engines and Tommy, the heart and soul of the Rybovich brand, did all of the designing and construction. Tommy Rybovich operated with an artist's flair, yet his designs turned out as functional as they were beautiful. He was the true creator and designer of the boats, having invented pretty much every single sport-fishing feature you see on a boat today including: the Tuna Tower, Outriggers, Fighting Chair, Tuna Doors, etc…

Regrettably since the early 1970’s when “Pop” Rybovich passed, and the premature death of his son Tommy from cancer followed, the Rybovich brand has never quite been the same. So what was the last boat that Tommy Rybovich and his two brothers John and Emil ever built together? You’re looking at it, and yes, you can find it here in Gables Estates.

The fact that one family created an entire industry over 60 years ago and whose products are still the industry standard today speaks for itself. Alas, the Rybovich product has always spoken for itself in performance and quality. There has never been much need for embellishment. What makes Toy Won so impressive is the fact that it symbolizes the end of an era.

With the passing of Tommy Rybovich from cancer in 1972, the soul of the yard was lost. His unparalleled devotion to his work had kept the yard on the leading edge of sport fishing boat design and finish work. As Emil would recall: "Nobody could work like Tommy". As it turned out, nobody else could build a Rybovich either. Tommy's death left a vacuum that try as they may, his brothers could not fill. It became increasingly apparent that project time and costs would increase exponentially with his absence. Interestingly enough, neither Johnny nor Emil had the knowledge to draw a set of lines or build one of their hulls. Their respective contributions had been every bit as important to the success of the yard, but the actual design and construction of the boats had been a given. That part had always been Tommy's job in the organization.

Tommy Ribovich was dying of cancer as Toy Won was flipped upside down and he grinded on the hull trying to finish the job before his death. It was the last boat that all three original Ribovich brothers were involved in. And it’s a boat that marks the end of an era and a legacy. The last “true” Rybovich ever made. Fittingly, the sport fishing masterpiece sits here on a dock, in the equally prestigious, Gables Estates.
