This Delta 94 represents the ultimate evolution of the classic She 31. 'Clairella' is one of only 17 Delta 94's built in Britain in the late 1970's and early 80's to the She 31 B hull design, Sporting the improved deck moulding reminiscent of her French counterpart the Dufour Arpege 31 she gives headroom below whilst ensuring pleasing lines to admirers alongside..
With the immense pedigree of Sparkman & Stephens imbued in her DNA and the quality accepted of the SHE range, owning 'Clairella' is akin to owning the nautical equivelant of a Morgan or MG. If considering a Contessa, an Arpege or similar, wake up and view a She Delta 94. Join those who know and understand the true secret of sublime sailing!
One of the classic production cruiser racers from the 1970's, the She 31 still offers excellent performance and useful accommodation. The Delta 94 was the final and some would say perfect evolution of the Original She 31 with more headroom and a revised and more comfortable interior built buy Laird Adams / Emsworth Ship yard.
The She 31 was one of the most successful and attractive Sparkman & Stephens designed production cruiser- racers. In many ways comparable to the Contessa 32's of the same era. They share the same virtues of excellent handling, all-weather performance and high stability, as well as being exceptionally pretty.
Yachting Monthly said " regarded by many as the epitome of good design"
Peter Poland said in his eulogy to S&S cruisers in PBO #585... of the She 31,
"This yacht is a joy to behold. Some compare her to the Contessa 32, but the sleeker She 31 is 0.2m narrower, 0.6m shorter on the waterline and weighs 750kg less. With a similar Ballast Ratio, around 45% and a higher SA/Disp ratio, ...she promises sharper performance while offering slightly less space below. In her day... she was near unbeatable."

Her original owner raced 'Clairella' in the 2 handed AZAB race of 1979 and in the 1980 Three Peaks race.
She has since provided enjoyment in both racing and cruising mode. Cruises have included the 900 mile round trip to Bristol for the first International Festival of the Sea, North & South Brittany and the Ijsselmeer. Racing results have included overall winner in the Classics race at the Portsmouth International Festival of the Sea and Class 2 Winner in the Royal Southampton YC 2 Handed Cowes-Cherbourg race in 2000.
With some chagrin and recourse to memories, it was a joy to see 'Clairella' hove in to view at Hamble Point to come ashore for marketing at the Michael Schmidt & Partner display stand.
This Broker was able to reminisce back to when he was 19 years old over the winter of 1978. Looking back at his old log book we see recorded;
Delivery of Delta 31 ‘Clairella’, Reg: Caernarvon. 4 Days on board. 150 miles logged.
29-12-1978 to 1-1-1979
Falmouth to Weymouth SW Winds 4-5, 6-7, 8-9 / Going NW ( This dry report fails to include the 6 hours hove to off Portland Bill in a 9 as we had run out of Diesel!) But the boat was well found and we couldn't have been safer. Getting in leads to yet more tales and swinging the lamp but not appropriate here?
Weymouth to Hamble 4-5, 6-7 NW to North . SNOW ( It was bloom'in cold and ice was on our sleeping bags and we had to use a mallet to free the mooring lines on the quay before departure!)
With her newly built in 1978, we were delivering a new'ish boat to the Elephant Boat Yard for her preparation to compete in the AZAB race.
We can see that the Entries for the 1979 AZAB recorded by the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club had the registered owner Mr Derick Nesbit competing with J. Beharrel as crew.
Mr Nesbit then competed in the 1983 Three Peaks Race.
He duly sold ‘Clairella’ on and her ownership is duly recorded in her cherished blue book and modern Reg docs.
A lucky man who embraces this Classic British icon.
