This 1980 Freedom 40 "Running Free" was designed by Gary Hoyt and Halsey Herreshoff to be an ideal cruiser capable of sailing anywhere in the world. This Great Lakes boat was refit in 2014 with Awlgrip, much new running rigging and new transmission. Hand laminated fiberglass with vacuum bagged end grain balsa core. Laminate is graded to provide high strength in critical areas. The balsa core adds strength without undue weight; also adds thermal and acoustical insulation. The laminate has a minimum modulus of 1.0 x 10^6 and a minimum tensile strength of 12,000 lbs. per square inch. This was first production yacht made with computer cut interior parts. It has no chainplates or stanchion bases to leak.
A similar hand laminated, balsa cored, fiberglass construction is used in the deck. The cockpit is integral with the deck and is provided with two 1.5" scuppers.
The forward V-berth is spacious and sleeps 2 with a removable filler cushion. Shelf storage is available on either side. Forward, there is access to the main mast step and anchor rode.
To port, there is a single berth with adequate storage lockers, TV, and DVD/VHS player above. Starboard is an L-shaped settee/single berth, teak table with removable fiddle rails. A removable companionway ladder is located amidships.
The galley features a gimbaled Hillerange 3-burner LPG range, abundant dry storage, a double stainless steel sink with fresh or raw water, bulkhead mounted knife block all to starboard. To port is a Seafrost Freezer and a Adler/Barbour refrigerator with dry storage behind.
There is access to the head from the main cabin, as well.
The large double berth is 6'7" long by 54" wide is to port. To starboard is a 42" x 35" chart table with opening top. The chart table also houses the ship's computer. In the foreward part of the cabin there are 8 storage drawers and a hanging storage locker. There are two doors foreword. The port door leads to the head, while the door straight on leads to the main cabin. The engine is easily accessed to port of the ladder. The mizzen mast step is also found here.
Double stainless steel sink with hot and cold pressure water system and manual back-up pump. Large (10 cu. ft.) cold storage with separate freezer and refrigeration compartments (Seafrost Freezer/Adler Barbour Refrigerator 12V). Storage with caned doors below for pots and pans. 3 burner Hiller Range with oven and broiler, propane fueled, fully gimbaled. Propane system has emergency solenoid operated shutoff valve in the galley and a marine shut-off at the tanks which are located aft.
Located to port with access from aft and main cabins. Manual pump head by Raritan is connected to a 25-gallon holding tank. The sink is molded in with adequate storage, full length mirror, and shower wand.
