The CT 44 is known by several names- Tanton 44, CT 44 and Ta Chiao 44. Constructed in Taiwan at the Ta Chiao Shipbuilding Company, she is built on the same hull as the Tanton designed Offshore 43, a cat ketch design.
Yves-Marie Tanton is a name that many people have never heard of, yet he truly was one of the pioneers in the yacht design world. He headed up the team with Bob Perry and Chuck Paine in Dick Carter’s studio in the early 70’s designing IOR race boats. In 1974 he opened his own studio and was very involved in the advancement of the unstayed carbon fiber mast. Still going strong in his offices in Newport, RI, Yves-Marie has over 650 designs to his name.
Built from 1982 until 1989, the CT44 was purpose built to be an ocean voyager and can be seen in all corners of the world. The spoon shaped bow provides a fine entry, her rounded bilge then flattens amidships and finishes with a rounded canoe stern, giving both good upwind performance as well as riding comfortably in a following sea. Her fin keel and a skeg hung rudder placed well aft provide excellent balance. The hull is Airex cored above the waterline, keeping her light enough to perform well while providing a stronger hull, quieter ride and keeping the interior more comfortable in varying climates. The high bulwarks run completely around the boat, with side decks that are wide and unobstructed, making her extremely safe and secure to move about in all sorts of weather conditions. The cockpit is huge and can comfortably seat eight or ten people for entertaining or just provide a great space for sleeping under the stars. Her two stateroom/two head interior provide lots of living space and has loads of storage everywhere you turn.
While the owner has done many upgrades to the boat, by far the most important thing he did was repowering her. Many of these come into brokerage with thousands of hours on the engine, leaving it for the next person to deal with. “Kayode” was repowered in 2014 and no expense was spared. While the engine was out, the engine compartment was repainted, rewired and new soundproofing insulation was installed. The fuel lines from the tanks were replaced and a dual Racor filtration system was installed. Everything was new- engine, transmission, coupling dampener, shaft, cutlass bearing and 3-blade feathering prop. With around 160 hours on it and still shining like new now, you are set for a long, long time. This is a huge benefit to her next owner.

Forward stateroom: Aft of the chain locker the master stateroom has a very generous size 6’5” long by 7’4” wide (at the shoulders) centerline V-Berth. With its 34” wide foot space it’s in a class of its own for comfort. Decorative staving line the hull sides, with fiddled shelves on both sides above the berth. There are 3 drawers beneath the berth as well as a tremendous amount beneath the cushions. On starboard there is a changing seat with storage beneath and a locker above and behind it. Aft of that is a huge locker with shelves and a fiddled shelf above it. Lighting and ventilation is provided by 2 brass reading lights, a teak Alpenglow light, an overhead hatch, one opening port and a Caframo fan. Cabin head room is 6’3”.
Forward Head: The forward head is ensuite in the master stateroom and located on port. Straight ahead as you enter is the sink. There is a locker below the sink and sliding doors with shelving above and behind. To the right of that is the head, with a large drawer and a double doored shelving storage above and behind that. A large teak framed mirror is to the left of the sink. The space is ventilated by an opening port, overhead hatch and a Dorade vent. There is also an overhead light in this space. Headroom is 6’3”
Saloon: On starboard is a 6’8” long straight settee. Beneath it is tankage and behind it is a long locker with 3 hinged drop-down door openings. Above and behind is a fiddled shelf, with single door and double door cabinets flanking either side. The centerline drop-leaf dinette table can comfortably seat 6 for meals and has top access storage as well as drawer storage inside it. On port the 6’5” long settee is radiused on one end and pulls out to convert to a double berth. Behind the seat back cushions is another long locker with three hinged drop-down doors. Ventilation and lighting are provided by 2 fixed lights, 2 opening ports, an overhead hatch, a Caframo fan and 2 reading lights. There are two beefy overhead handrails as well as two at a lower level along the house side, so moving about in a sea is nice and safe. Saloon headroom is 6’5”.
Navigation station: The nav is located on starboard and is forward facing. The curved seat provides comfortable seating on all points of sail. The chart top area is quite generous and easily accommodates a chart book; beneath the chart top is plenty of storage. In addition, there are drawers below for even more storage. Along the hull side there is a large panel with plenty of room for additional electronics. The electrical panel has a glass door to protect it from weather or accidental switching.
Galley: Located on port and U-shaped, this galley has a truly impressive amount of counter space and designed for preparation of meals at sea as well as on the hook at the end of the day. The deep double stainless steel sinks are located exactly where they should be – on centerline of the vessel. Along the aft end of the counter space is a large (approximately 9 cf.) stainless steel lined refrigerator space with two top-loading lids and one front loading door. Above that is a deep spice rack and two cabinets with shelves. Along the hull side are 4 drawers; forward of them is the gimbaled 3-burner stove with a folding teak cover. Above and behind that area are 2 large shelf cabinets with sliding doors. Galley headroom is 6'4".
Aft Head: The head is located at the base of the companionway on starboard. As you enter the sink is to your left, with counter to ceiling mirrors and storage beneath it. Along the hull side are two double door lockers and two drawers. Aft and to the right is the head with a double doored wet locker behind it. An opening and two dorade vents provide ventilation, with an overhead LED light providing additional lighting. Head room is 5’11”.
Aft stateroom: At the base of the companionway and on port, the aft guest stateroom has a large 6’5” x 36” x 58” berth. It is spacious enough to make your guests feel at home and a great sea berth when underway. There is a tremendous amount of storage space beneath the berth, including two drawers. Along the hull side are two louvered drop front lockers and a large deep fiddled shelf area. Forward of that and along the hull is a hanging locker with a fiddled shelf above it. There are two opening ports, an overhead hatch and a Hella fan for ventilation as well as a pair of reading lights and one overhead light. Head room is 6’3”.
Both heads have not been flushed using Bay water by the current owner.
This cabin is head only; the shower drain sump, wiring and hose have been removed.

You tend to expect high engine hours on boats like this- because they are true voyagers. Kayode received a new power plant in 2014 and it has seen very light use since, which is a huge plus for her next owners. The engine compartment was reinsulated at the time of engine replacement. The engine is located below the galley sink area, is heavily insulated and has large access panels on all 4 sides, providing phenomenal access for servicing.
