Tim Jackett is the designer and Tartan Yachts is the builder and this is one gorgeous vessel that has been meticulously taken care of inside and out. It looks better than new…..really.  The Tartan 31, in general, was designed as a medium-displacement cruiser with lots of power for performance to carry on the Tartan tradition of excellent performing racing/cruising yachts. But Alive n Free was only used as a cruising vessel on Lake Superior her entire life of one ownership. She is engineered to withstand the rigors of extended offshore sailing and to offer her crew the maximum amount of comfort available in 31 feet. The deck is designed with the crew in mind with an efficient layout for easy sail control. The details of the Tartan 31 offer the discriminating buyer a true valued yacht. The hull is full in the ends with U-shaped sections with a firm turn at the bilge for excellent form stability and low wetted surface. This T-31 has the Scheel shoal draft keel and an elliptical rudder. She behaves well and performs well throughout a wide wind range. The rig is a custom tall tapered mast with double spreaders with a larger main allowing the fore triangle to be a high aspect ratio which produces more manageable and efficient headsails.  She performs well in even light to medium air.  The interior is designed with the offshore sailor in mind. The forward cabin has a side mount double with drawers under. Included is a full hanging locker & bureau.  The head is large with a shower.  The main cabin has bunk size settees with contoured upholstery. A table folds on the bulkhead when not in use. To port is a split pilot berth which hinges down and doubles as a handy storage bin for bedding and duffle bags. The U-shaped galley is to starboard and is designed to be secure in a seaway. There is a large, well-insulated ice box. Galley storage is abundant and includes drawers, teak louvred door compartments and dry storage. Aft to port is a nav station. The quarter berth double is 5’ in width and 6’4” long. Ventilation is tremendous with 9 aluminum opening ports, 3 deck hatches and two dorados. Tartans are solid and well put together.
