Keel type Iron fin keel with wing, and spade rudder
Angelo Lavranos worked for Angus Primrose in the United Kingdom and Sparkman & Stephens in New York, before setting up his own design office in Capetown, South Africa in 1975.
One of his most popular designs was the L34/Holiday 34, the L34 being a racing version with deep lead bulbed keel, and the Holiday 34 being more fully fitted internally, and with a shallower iron wing keel. Not to be confused with the Bavaria models designated 'Holiday', the Holiday 34 is a cruising version of the Angelo Lavranos designed L34, a popular ocean racer in South Africa. These boats are very strongly built, and designed for the tough sailing conditions off Capetown. L34s have frequently done well in Cape-Rio transatlantic races, as well as the Mauritius to Durban races, which transit the Agulhas Bank, notorious for heavy seas where the fast flowing Agulhas current (up to four knots into wind) hits the Southern Ocean rollers.
