Letter from the Owner
Hi Gary:
I'll try to answer these questions to the best of my ability. The dry weight of the boat as listed in the brochure is 3630 pounds. I have always just assume the trailer weighed 1500 pounds. I haven't weighed either the trailer separately or the combination of the two on the road. My guess is the combination is 6000 to 7000 pounds with all the cruising gear and the tanks full. I towed Kai Lani from Florida to California with a 2002 Chevy Tahoe. On other trips I towed Kailani with a Toyota tundra half ton pick up..... California to Port Hardy on Vancouver Island and California to Prince Rupert. I bought the boat in Florida and the registered owner was Kraus Huys, Lima Peru and the boat was documented in Belgium. I'm not aware if he bought the boat new or if there was a previous owner. Using Yuba City California as a homeport I have towed, launched, and cruised the boat in Baja California, Florida, Southeast Alaska, San Francisco bay, Lake Tahoe, Desolation Sound area, and the circumnavigation of Vancouver Island. The excellent cruising capabilities and portability of Kai Lani offer sailing Horizon's that are virtually unlimited. On my previous sailboat, a corsair F 27 I did multiple trips in Baja California and several leisurely explorations of the northern area between Port Angeles , WA and Glacier Bay, AK. I also hauled the boat to Chetumal, Mexico and cruised Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and some of Honduras. The farthest north that F 27 reached was Yellow knife, Northwest Territories, where we cruised Great Slave Lake for almost 2 months......."virtually unlimited sailing horizons." Kai Lani's only accident that I'm aware of was her slipping off the jackstands when being bottom painted and those repairs were done by KKMI in Richmond California which consisted of: new prop shaft, new engine mounts, new fuel tank tabs, and new cutlass bearing and strut. There was no hull damage. The only deficiency that comes to mind is the hot water tank. I removed it, disassembled it, pressure checked it, and checked it for any corrosion (none), then re-insulated it and reinstalled it with new hoses. I did not reconnect the AC 120 V power. I think the seaworthy reputation of these boats speaks for itself, and the fact that I have added the versatile Bimini almost doubles the living area and comfort...... cool and shaded in hot areas and warm and dry in the colder climates.
