Manufacturer Provided Description
The Melges 24's blazing performance comes from the rig design, hydrostatic form and the structural components that make up the complete boat. The factors are design and execution. Melges assembled a strong team to produce this design, and this synergy has been formed into one humdinger of a sailboat. Winner of the Sailing World magazine's 1994 "Boat of the Year." Virtually all of the components that make up the Melges 24 are built using a fiberglass PVC foam sandwich and advanced manufacturing techniques. The sandwich construction consists of thin layers of strong material (facing skins) bonded to either side of a thick layer of relatively weak, but very light material (core). The resin system used is a vinylester. Through higher toughness properties and better resistance to water absorption, this results in a tougher overall laminate than conventional polyesters. Melges Performance Sailboats has joined in an alliance with British Aerospace to produce the Melges 24 in England for the European market. The tooling, all built in Zenda, was pulled off of the Melges 24 master plugs to insure one-design continuity between boats built in the United States and Europe.
