Specification and details
This Prout 38 was purchased by the present owner new and fully completed by Prouts yard at Canvey Island in the UK in late 1998. She was used as their Southampton Boat Show exhibit for that year. She was built to the ‘Interior Upgrade’ specs as detailed on the original specification sheets as well as having the following extras:
Simpson Lawrence electric anchor winch
Shore power connections and fittings
Stern anchor and fittings
Mosquito screens to all port-lights
Autohelm ST7000 automatic pilot with linked-in depth sounder, wind speed , direction indicator and hull speed indicator.
Latterly she has been fitted with:
5kva 220v generator
Additional fridge compressor to the large cool-box in the forward starboard cabin
Electric head in main shower room to port
12-220v pure sine wave inverter
4-man Zodiac life-raft
Storm jib and cruising chute
9ft ‘Carib’ inflatable dingy and 4hp outboard
She carries a large variety of spares as well as a full compliment of domestic and galley equipment.
After the Boat Show this Prout 38 was sailed to the Mediterranean and kept in various marinas in Mallorca (Spain’s Balearic Islands) where the owners were living at the time and used as a family boat on weekends and the usual summer cruise. In 2003, upon their retirement, they moved aboard and sailed her first to Gibraltar, then the Canary Islands and finally to the Caribbean where they based themselves and lived aboard for the following three years cruising all the Eastern Caribbean islands. Latterly they settled on Bequia – part of St Vincent and the Grenadines – where they moved ashore only then using the Prout 38 for occasional cruises.
From the owners:
The Prout 38 is an extremely safe and solidly constructed boat. In all the years of sailing she has never given us a moments concern despite our meeting the usual variety of storms that every sailor encounters. She has been constantly maintained (both engines having been re-built, port in 2006 and starboard in 2009) and thanks to Prouts hand-laid GRP hull, there never has been any signs of osmosis and the hulls are today as good as they were when laid down in 1998. Whilst she could use a little TLC, this is only to cosmetic detail and does not detract from the overall quality of the craft.
Manufacturer Provided Description
The Prout 38 features a "high volume" hull form that provides increased load carrying; smoother, more comfortable seakeeping; and a dramatic improvement in performance. The once familiar Prout nacelle has been succeeded by this mini version with an arched bridgedeck; this example of "monocoque" engineering is at the heart of the 38 and creates massive structural integrity throughout the boat. The mini nacelle acts as a longitudinal stiffener while the high clearance and arching of the bridgedeck gives added strength and deflects solid water contact with great efficiency. Flatter underwater hull sections reduce drag and minimize stern wash for blistering offwind performance. Low aspect ratio NACRA-profiled keels and elliptical rudder profiles give the Prout 38 tremendous lift for real yacht-like performance upwind with the power to support the taller, more efficient rig. Prout's designers have managed to reduce weight in the bow and transom of the hulls to cut down pitching and improve overall stability and comfort on board. And with both a sail area - displacement ratio of around 20:1 and an advanced double diamond rig, the Prout 38 will deliver rocket ship passage making in breezes as well as superb light-weather performance. And when the wind dies away completely, the muted throb and reassurance of her twin Volvo 20 hp water-cooled diesels will oversee her safe return to port. On deck, the elegant Prout 38 provides levels of comfort and security that demonstrate Prout's 45 year record at the forefront of catamaran building. Access to the sumptuous main saloon is through a huge Plexiglas bi-fold door from the cockpit. In fine weather or in harbor, this can be left open to give an amazing open plan feeling to the boat with excellent light down below. Generous relaxing and dining areas are provided in the saloon as well as a truly ergonomic navigation and electronics station - all with a panoramic view of the outside world. Prout's highest standards of styling and decor are of course much in evidence, and individual owners are invited to contribute their own preferences for fabrics, wood finishes, and so on. However, in the interests of achieving value for money, the Prout 38 will conform to a more "standard" accommodation layout than her predecessors. This comprises two enormous double cabins with luxury size berths and ensuite facilities together with a third cozy double or twin berth cabin. With a sculptured and luxuriously appointed bathroom, the Prout 38 offers excellent and versatile accommodation for long or short term voyaging, or for sailing with guests.
Prout 38 Specifications - Standard Equipment Construction - Prout achieves the strength essential in a catamaran design by bonding the bulkheads into the one-piece hull molding to form deep box sections, and then by bonding the one-piece deck molding to the hull and bulkheads to create a monocoque shell system. The hull molding has integrated longitudinal and transverse "mini-nacelles " designed specifically to increase stiffness. The bulkheads are located strategically to absorb the torsion and compression loads inherent in a catamaran's structure, and the main mast support bulkhead is mounted on a foam stringer to help transmit the mast loads away from the bridgedeck.
