We purchased 'Merihelmi' ( 'Sea Pearl' in Finnish) in Finland from the first owner in 2010. Unfortunately he was in long term poor health and was unable to use her. He also had a large motor yacht which he did use so Merihelmi spent most of her early life in storage in a shed in with a couple of months each year on the owners private pontoon at the bottom of his garden. Merihelmi is hull number 8 built in 2002. Dimensions are: hull length 38'8" overall about 40' 6” as Merihelmi has the 'slutter' rig with bowsprit option. LWL 33'0", beam 12'2", draft 5'7" (1,7m), dry displacement 9.5 tonnes, about 11 tonnes in cruising mode. She has the Yanmar 56HP engine with electric/servo controls at the helm and chart table. In total Merihelmi has spent at least half her life ashore indoors.
Merihelmi has the additional water tank option so carries about 750L fresh water in two stainless tanks and 250L fuel. Range under power at 6 kts is 600 nautical miles or more. She also has warm air central heating and a hot water tank heated either by engine or shore power. Stern and bower anchors both with electric windlass controlled from helm position. All batteries renewed last year. Flexofold prop fitted. Bow thruster. New raw water cooling pump (the seal was dripping). Stern gland seals renewed last summer. The original saloon table is quite large with a built in cocktail cabinet. We have replaced this with a bespoke slightly smaller table on telescopic mount that allows the saloon to be converted to an additional double for occasional overnight guests. We have the original table and cabinet which can easily be reinstalled if required. Merihelmi also has an overall winter cover which has only been used once when the boat wasn’t stored over winter in a shed. All hull fittings have been replaced with bronze skin fittings, bronze tailpipes and bronze seacocks. The originals were, to quote the builders, 'best quality chromium plated brass' although when removed were in perfect condition. The engine has been regularly and well maintained and a new upgraded GPS receiver and new wind instrument has been fitted.
If you are unfamiliar with the R38 internal layout I have attached a picture from the layout plan. In summary we have a large aft cabin with either a full size double plus fore and aft settee or the latter can be converted by an infill piece to make a kingsize berth. Storage lockers and two hanging wardrobes. Main saloon with large table and U shaped settee to port, full size chart table and seat to stbd. Also incorporates a second engine control and steering position. Double glazed tinted windows with s/s frames in saloon. Heaps of storage behind and under the seating. Down one step to galley on stbd side which include a fridge and separate freezer. Opposite is the heads which includes a separate shower room partitioned by a curtain. Fwd cabin with the usual V shaped double - quite large and comfortable for two adults with wardrobe on either side plus lockers etc. Notably there is no GRP visible anywhere inside the boat.
On deck with the exception of halyards, all lines are led back to the cockpit. The main is electric in mast reefing and works without problem. The jib is self tacking and both jib and genoa are roller reefing..
Merihelmi is fairly slender compared with many of the mass produced boats and sails well with an easy motion in a seaway. An ideal and comfortable boat for extended cruising with 2 or 4 on board.
I have replaced the original CQR with a Sarca Excel anchor privately imported from Australia . (at significant expense) The Sarca scored best in several independent tests and once set is almost as secure as a permanent mooring. A very impressive piece of kit. The stern anchor is a stainless steel Bruce.
