Since the early 1960's Grand Banks has been building conservative, fuel-efficient, seaworthy, diesel-powered displacement cruisers and is credited with creating the trawler category within the boating industry. After launching more than 3000 hulls, Grand Banks recognized that seasoned yachtsmen were looking for a new kind of trawler that married the traditional Grand Banks qualities with a turn of speed, and in 2006 the 'Fast Trawler' was introduced to the market in the form of the 47 Heritage Europa. Built on a Sparkman Stephens-designed planing hull capable of cruising speeds in the 20+ knot range and powered by moderately-sized twin diesel engines, Grand Banks again created a new segment of the yacht market and has gone on to introduce an entire range of yachts modeled after the fast trawler concept.
PoPo is hull number 5 of GB's Heritage 47 Europa 'fast trawler' design and is a veteran Puget Sound cruiser. Equipped for comfortable journeys to distant anchorages, PoPo has been carefully maintained by her owners and is in need of nothing. She is moored here in Seattle and is available for inspection by appointment.
PoPo is boarded using either port or starboard side gates or from the integral swim step through the transom door. All paths lead through the spacious covered cockpit with teak sole into the salon. To port in the salon is an L-shaped leather-covered settee with hi-low dining table and to starboard are a pair of matching leather-covered barrel chairs separated by an entertainment cabinet that houses the television on its lift and the Bose Surround-Sound Audio System. Forward to starboard is the lower helm station with comprehensive navigation electronics (see description in following section), and full propulsion controls, all comfortably within reach from the leather-covered double-wide adjustable helm seat. To port is the spacious galley also described in detail in the following sections.
Descend three steps to the companionway and find the airy Guest Stateroom to starboard with twin berths separated by a generous cedar-lined hanging locker. Additional storage is provided in drawers under each berth. To port across the companionway is the Guest Head which features a fully-enclosed stall shower, stone counter surfaces and a VacuFlush toilet.
Forward is the Master Suite featuring a centerline queen berth that houses multiple spacious drawers in its base. The berth is surrounded by storage compartments, including a cedar-lined hanging locker to accommodate the owner's change-of-clothes or foul-weather gear. The Owner's ensuite head is to port and includes a large fully-enclosed walk-in shower, premium Grohe fixtures, stone counter surfaces and a VacuFlush toilet.
PoPo's interior is finished in satin-varnished matched-grain teak throughout with gloss-varnished teak-and holly sole. A diesel-fired Webasto furnace provides multiple-zone heating for four-season cruising.
Befitting her stature, PoPo has a galley designed for the cruising gourmet. A U-shaped stone countertop provides abundant workspace and is oriented so the cook is always a part of the conversation, whether preparing snacks or a meal. A Tundra 42RE undercounter refrigerator keeps things cool while a separate Tundra TF20DC Freezer is available for long-term storage. Cooking is accomplished on the Princess three-burner Ceramic Cooktop with Ventialation Hood or the Sharp Carousel Convection Microwave Oven. Storage is provided in drawers, cupboards, tip-out bins and overhead lockers. Finally, an extra-deep Stainless Steel sink with Grohe faucet faces forward where it is convenient for quick clean-ups.
PoPo is equipped to meet virtually any electrical demand whether at anchor, dockside or underway with parallel circuit-breaker-protected AC and DC electrical systems. A 50-Amp 240VAC Shore Power Connection with 75-foot cable satisfiues demand for AC services when shoreside. At anchor or underway, her 9.0 kW Onan generator can be energized to provide AC power when required.
A total of seven AGM batteries provide current for the 24 VDC side of the electrical system, supported by a primary TruCharge 40+ multi-stage battery charger and a secondary ChargeMaster 12/100-3 battery charger.
Underwater corrosion protection is provided by a Professional Mariner ProSafe zinc saver.
Piloting PoPo is a pleasure whether operating from the heated Lower Helm or the fully-enclosed Upper Helm. The Lower Helm is located forward and to starboard in the salon immediately adjacent to the Helm Door, allowing the pilot access to the covered side deck. Superior sight lines and a comfortable double-wide helm chair contribute to comfortable cruising in all weather conditions. A complete suite of navigational electronics and propulsion controls assist the pilot and includes:
The fully-enclosed Upper Helm is located on the flybridge centerline and provides the pilot with 360-degree visibility. A fold down electronics console keeps the main navigation electronics sheltered when not in use. Tandem bimini-tops and removable side and aft curtains offer protection in all weather. The removable flybridge windsreen includes durable hard acrylic windows with electric wipers. The pilot has a complete array of navigational electronics at the Upper Helm as well:
