Californian Yachts was started by Jule Marshall in 1972. The first commercially successful model, the Californian 42 LRC (Long Range Cruiser) was launched in 1976 and was produced for the next nine years. A differentiating point for early Californians was that they were not built in Asia, like many of their contemporaries, but rather in Orange County, California. In addition, Californians used mahogany instead of teak for their interiors and gained an excellent reputation for quality, plentiful space, and good speed with minimal horsepower. Ownership changed hands a few times over the next several decades with Marshall purchasing the brand in 1984 and 1991 and then selling it again to Carver Yachts in 1986. Today, the brand is owned by Navigator Yachts and Products and is still built in the USA. Current new models include the 48 and 55 LRC.
