A motoryacht is a very broad and distinctly traditional umbrella term that can be used to define any large (40-foot plus) recreational power-driven vessel. While it is often employed by boat builders to confer a sense of grandeur upon high-end open day boats, it most commonly refers to a luxurious multi-deck, flybridge-style craft with an expansive main deck space. Whether displacement, semi-displacement or planing, and whether monohull or multihull, that encompasses everything from lavishly appointed mid-range sports cruisers to the world’s most illustrious superyachts.
A motor yacht refers to specific yachts that are larger than 12 feet, with a top length of around 27 feet, bridging the gap between small yachts and mega yachts or superyachts. The motor yacht is designed for overnight use, and can even stay on the water for weeks, thanks to private cabins, heads with showers, galleys, appliances and food storage, and everything else needed for extended stays. These boats all feature high-end navigation systems and plenty of social spaces for entertaining. Subclasses of motor yachts include the pilothouse, sedan bridge, flybridge, express, and aft cabin yacht, although most are bridge boats.
Motor yachts have a variety of construction options, including some with full-displacement hulls and other models with planing hulls that are ideal for reduced resistance and increased speeds. These yachts are typically made of fiberglass, aluminium, or steel as they need to be capable of holding up to extended trips in saltwater. Carbon fiber models are also available, as well as custom or semi-custom designs.
A motor yacht is typically going to be powered by a straight-shaft inboard engine, which could either be gasoline- or diesel-powered. Newer models with pod drives are becoming popular, with a variety of range and power options in all engines. Some choose a high-performance model while others will pick a more efficient engine that will save fuel on longer journeys.
Because motor yachts are high-end boats in the £1 million (or higher) range, they pretty much have whatever boaters want. Most models come standard with high-end navigation, marine appliances, electronics and entertainment systems. There are also premium satellite systems, performance engine upgrades, and luxury interior and cabin items to create a perfectly opulent high seas experience.
