Multi-Hull boats
A multihull is a boat, typically a catamaran or a trimaran, that has more than one hull. These ships are classified by the hull arrangement, the number of hulls, and also the shape and size of the vessel. Hulls are typically side-by-side arrangements, with many models having three hulls. The first multihulls came from Austronesian design and were created to prevent capsizing in rough ocean waters. Outrigger canoes and proas are also classified under the multihull class.
How are Multihulls built?
Historically, multihulls have been built of wood. As they were primarily used for sailing, the standard sailboat construction methods were popular, with added construction to connect the hulls of the vessel and create decks, rigging, and other structures. Today, there are also multihulls built from fiberglass cylinder molding, as well as fiberglass matting over wood. Until the 60s, boats were constructed by boat builders on custom order or by boaters themselves. Today, the model is mass-produced in many styles.
What Types of Engines Power Multihulls?
Most multihulls are designed for sailing and will be powered solely by sails and rudders, along with a modern rigging system. Of course, wind makers and other power generators can be added to give the vessel increased power. There are also powerboats that have multihull designs, with a variety of gas turbine engine and outboard motor options.
What Optional Equipment is Available for Multihulls?
The multihull has an array of available optional equipment and accessories. Sailing vessels can be outfitted with upgraded rigging and sails, as well as generators, navigation systems, and even racing equipment. There are replacement motors, aftermarket parts, marine radios and technology, sail covers, rudder systems, and more. There is also a full selection of trailers for multihull vessels, including aluminium and galvanized steel models that can fit any arrangement and number of hulls.
