History

Mr. Butler Greer was the first owner of this yacht when it was christened CHARBUT after his wife, Charlotte, and himself, Butler.  It was originally berthed in Sausalito for the first 8 years, after which it was inherited by Mr. Greer's nephew, Wally Ranford.

Later, renamed RIALTO, she had unknown owners until Bill Bailey purchased her in 1984 and renamed her TORIA, and unfortunately, she was sunk.  After salvage, she was taken to Stone Boatyard where she was abandoned.  Grace Bodle bid $2.00 and became the next owner.  After 19 years of refurbishment, the project was complete and she was renamed STEPHANIE in honor of the Stephens Brothers boat building heritage.

The hull has been restored in original materials (mahogany over oak frames) and is stronger than it was when new.  The rest of the boat, i.e. decks, deck house, cabins, flying bridge and transom have been replaced in Burma Teak.  All machinery, electrical wiring, piping, fuel tanks, galley equipment, heads, pumps and navigation equipment have been renewed.

Engines

• The engines in are Detroit Diesel 4-71 "Pancake" engines which were especially developed for certain landing craft as horizontal in line 4 cylinder 160 HP engines that would occupy a low profile space beneath the decks of shore boats for the US Navy. 
• Two NEW engines were sourced in crates and installed near the completion of the refurbishment of the boat.  These are thought to be identical replacements for the original engines.  New supports and engine mounts were fabricated.
• The salon roof is designed and installed with removable fasteners that will allow for the removal of the engines from overhead should that become necessary for any reason.
