This Haliotis 38 is located in Tiverton, Rhode Island.
A recent (April 2021) survey found the boat be in good, solid structural shape, but it appears there is diesel in the engine coolant that needs to be examined for a "potential" cracked block. The owner plans to have a mechanic take a look at it to get further information, but is located on the west coast. The buyer that contracted for the surveyor is likewise remotely located and while thinking the boat had "good bones" was not in a position to work on it himself, and consequently decided not to move forward
In the meantime seller is taking any offers on an as is, where is basis.
This reconditioned engine was installed just 2 years ago, and ran for perhaps 10 days from South Carolina to Rhode Island in 2020 with no obvious issues, so the presence of fuel in the coolant is not easily understood.
The old engine is available and perhaps could be used to provide the parts needed if necessary.
Built for serious cruising the Haliotis is a solidly built vessel with a solid glass hull and cored deck that surveyor says are in good shape. There are a couple of other projects not yet complete that the owner had planned prior to his relocation. Replacing the head stay, installing a new engine gauge panel are primary and owner suggests that all systems should be rewired and examined.
She is sitting on the hard in Rhode Island.
38ft LOA on deck with a 12 ft beam she is not just built for the open sea, she is built with cruising comfort in mind with an aft cabin and a roomy head to stern. The hull appears to be in good condition with no obvious blistering or paint build up.
She is a sloop rig converted to a cutter rig (known as a ""slutter") by adding a second head stay. The forehead stay does need replacing. She comes equipped with a number of sails including a storm jib and cruising spinnaker.
Down below, the large galley to starboard connects to the open salon and forward to a vee berth. The salon has very comfortable seating on both port and starboard large enough to serve as berths. The aft stateroom is accessed by a door to port and is quite roomy with plenty of storage.
There is a new guage panel still to be installed. The existing one works fine, the owner purchased a new one to relocate it to a more convenient position.
With the centerboard up the Haliotis 38 allows you access to shallower spots than typical 38 foot vessels can.
While there is work to be done, what is apparent is that this is one solidly built vessel that once cleaned up, will make for great, comfortable cruising.
A 2005 9' inflatable dinghy is included with a 6hp Tohatsu motor.
