Llewellyn Howland (founder of Concordia Company in 1926), commissioned L. Francis Herreshoff in 1945 to design a slightly larger version of the Herreshoff 12½ for daysailing on in Buzzards Bay. This design was the result with a waterline length of 14 feet and LOA of 17’3”. In comparison to the Herreshoff 12 ½ this design has a similar draft and beam, but is about 2’ longer which allows for a larger deeper cockpit and gives the hull a longer, sleeker look. The Buzzards Bay 14 can comfortably seat 6, compare with 4 in the 12 ½. There is also more sail area for increased speed and power, which is offset by a heavier, but not deeper keel. Like the 12 ½, the Buzzard Bay 14 will easily handle any stiff breeze, point nicely and will be relatively dry under a wide range of conditions. Does not require a strong or athletic crew, and would be easy to sail singlehanded at all times. This is the perfect boat for both the new sailor just learning the ways of the sea, and the more experienced sailor.
