Miramar, a fitting name for a yacht of this caliber, "to look at the sea". The name Miramar had special meaning for the owners of this incredible Shannon, as during her extensive build and outfitting process it formed the baseline for the yachts design. Shannon Boat Company of Bristol, RI was founded in 1975 by Walter Schultz and David Walters to build strong, comfortable offshore cruising yachts. Over the years Shannon Boat Company built a reputation for quality, comparable to the best including Hinckley in the US and the best in Europe. Many Shannons have circumnavigated and the company offered a wide range of designs. Every Shannon is a semi-custom yacht built for a specific owner and is painstakingly constructed to the highest standards using the finest materials. Miramar is no different, and in many respects the finest yacht that Shannon was tasked to construct. The yachts owners, both knowledgable sailors, were highly involved in the yachts construction as they fitted Miramar with features, layouts, and materials that would make the yacht not only personally theirs but also provide a striking appeal to guests and other experienced yachtsmen. Miramar's build was so detailed and extensive that construction was started in 2012 with full commissioning not occurring until 2014. Shannon wanted to make sure that Miramar was the best yacht they had ever built, to be the jewel of the sea and the queen of the boat shows. The Shannon 52 RDP is a pilot yacht designed for those looking for a modern styled, luxurious, short-handed ocean cruiser that allows them to get out of the weather. The 52 RDP is not a motor-sailor, but a full fledged sailing yacht with many of the benefits found in pilothouse and motor-sailor designs. Miramar is fitted with the Walter Schultz designed 'Sketch' rig. This allows the yacht to sail well in a wide range of wind speeds without putting crew outside of the cockpit. Double head stays are fitted with furlers for a full size 135% genoa and yankee. Leisurefurl booms for the mainsail and mizzen. There is also a mizzen staysail. A cable staysail halyard is fitted for the addition of a storm staysail if required. An asymmetrical spinnaker is aboard in an ATN sleeve for easy use off the wind. One of the owners requirements was that the yacht be functional in the ICW which she is thanks for her Sketch rig height under 64' and shoal draft of 5' 9" with the centerboard raised. The hull is borrowed from the Shannon aft cockpit 47/52 center cockpit design and has the same proven offshore sailing characteristics. All sailing controls lead to the cockpit where two large Harken primary winches are 2-speed electric powered plus an electric halyard winch for the mainsail hoist. The yacht can be completely operated by one person from the cockpit. Construction is modern and bullet proof. The hull and deck are hand laid GRP using vinyl-ester resin and biaxial laminates with a closed cell PVC foam core. The hull is further reinforced by Kevlar hybrids that are commonly used in flexible armor. The keel/centerboard is internally ballasted with solid lead, encapsulated and sealed within the hull, this eliminates the need for keel bolts. Additional kevlar laminates in the bow and keel for added safety in the event of collision or grounding. The hull to deck joint is bonded with biaxial laminates backing to the internal hull flange and thru-bolted every 8". A skeg mounted rudder with stainless post and internal reinforcement and the centerboard is operated by a geared handcrank in the cockpit to allow for easy adjustment, virtually eliminating potential system failures. Many of the systems were custom chosen by the owners after consultation with Walter Schultz. For example the helm stations have completely independent steering and engine control systems. The topside helm controls the rudder by a geared linkage with no cables to stretch or wear down. The inside helm controls the rudder by a hydraulic system. Likewise the engine controls are digital at the topside, manual cable at the inside helm with override, and both helms have complete engine readouts and functionality. There are twin Yanmar diesel engines with independent dual Racor filters and three separate alternators with automatic battery charging relays. Thanks to this amount of built in redundancy Miramar can be cruised with nary a question about her capabilities and safety. As well she can cruise under power for 1,000 miles. Miramar is the perfect blend of a full fledged sailing yacht with features above and beyond her competitors. Stepping below the saloon is fitted with large, armored and tinted picture windows to allow for complete visibility while standing or sitting. There is a saloon table with adjustable height for dining or cocktails, aft facing nav station with complete electronics, bucket chairs for additional seating or book reading, and a complete helm station. Moving forward is the galley with visibility through the saloon to the cockpit, allowing for easy communication and providing an airy interior. A VIP cabin and head are fitted forward as well. Proceeding aft from the saloon is the aft passageway with additional seating for a comfortable semi-private relaxation area, or convert to bunks for extra guest space, a fully stocked bar and wash/dryer is fitted as well. In the stern is a tastefully ordained master stateroom and ensuite which provides the utmost privacy and comfort for the owners. Miramar's owners have been incredibly fastidious with their maintenance regime and it truly shows. All services are up to date and she is in incredible cosmetic condition. Miramar is truly turn-key and ready to continue her adventures. Contact the listing agent directly to setup your private showing of this incredible Shannon. Photography by Billy Black
