  • The Hollywood connection: when oscar-winners go yachting

The Hollywood connection: when oscar-winners go yachting

Written by: Kim Kavin
Published on 08 March 2016
The world of megayachting in so often shrouded in secrecy. Royalty, reclusive billionaires and even Hollywood A-listers simply do not want their favourite haunts splashed all over the front pages. Understandable, in a way, but frustrating all the same. So where exactly did best actor award winner Leo DiCaprio go to celebrate after the 88th annual Academy Awards on February 28th? Naturally, the Vanity Fair party photos are all over the Internet, but where did stars such as Eddie Redmayne, star of The Danish Girl, or Kate Winslet and Michael Fassbender, both of whom starred in the film Steve Jobs, go with their friends after the after party? Nobody knows for sure, which is where we permit ourselves a little journalistic indulgence. You can be sure there were some megayachts involved somewhere along the line, so here's a bit of wild speculation based on past sightings and healthy dose of guesswork.
Leonardo DiCaprio megayacht Topaz

Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio has been spotted aboard megayacht Topaz.

Leonardo DiCaprio

Leo doesn’t mess around when it comes to superyachts. He goes big—seriously big—most recently having been spotted aboard the 482-foot Lurssen Topaz. She is among the 10 largest private yachts in the world, with an onboard swimming pool, a pair of helipads and an indoor cinema. (All the better to screen The Revenant for friends after DiCaprio won the award as Best Actor.)

Matt Damon

Here’s the really good news: Although Matt Damon didn’t win Best Actor for The Martian, maybe he chartered a yacht to celebrate, and if he did, you never know what kind of photo might emerge. The last time Damon was spotted on a yacht, it was shirtless with Chris Hemsworth, who plays Thor in The Avengers films. They were photographed whizzing down a 40-foot water slide from atop the 160-foot expedition yacht Plan B.

Sylvester Stallone

Sly was up for Best Supporting Actor for Creed, and he has been photographed on a number of yachts over the years, including the 147-foot Oceanfast Perfect Persuasion. That yacht was listed for sale at $8 million just a few years ago, when she was chartering at a weekly base rate of about $140,000 for 10 guests. The hot tub on the sundeck is a great spot to chill with a few bottles of champagne, whether there’s an Oscar along for the ride or not.
Steven Spielberg megayacht Seven Seas

Spielberg’s megayacht Seven Seas just wasn’t big enough.

Steven Spielberg

The A-list director was nominated this year by way of Bridge of Spies, which was up for Best Picture (though Spielberg did not get a Best Director nod for the film). He has made waves in the yachting world for a while now, first by commissioning the 282-foot Oceanco Seven Seas in 2010 and then by putting her up for sale last year—because he plans to build an even bigger yacht next. We’re pretty sure the new one will have an onboard cinema, too.

Harrison Ford

Yes, we agree: The fact that Han Solo was left off the Best Actor list is a crime worse than smuggling cargo for Jabba the Hutt. (Star Wars: The Force Awakens only got nods in the editing, sound and special effects categories.) But while the movie was winning or not,  Harrison Ford should have treated himself to another epic on-water excursion. A few years ago, he got some sailing time in aboard none other than the America’s Cup trimaran owned by Larry Ellison and Team Oracle. Who needs the Millennium Falcon when you have hydrofoils to catch serious air, right?
