Petán was designed by Willian Fife and built at the Hermanos Sagredo shipyard in Bilbao.

Her hull design is believed to be the latest First Rule 8m yacht and is recognized to be hydrodynamically as good as a yacht could be at the time. She does not ride waves, but she rides through them and does not produce a wake until near her maximum hull speed.

Petán had the most innovative deck design of all First Rule yachts. She wears a Marconi Bermudan platform. As originally drawn, it carries 1,248 square feet of sail at a maximum of 42 feet and a 35-foot boom.
