Description
1953 Chris-Craft 17’ Sportsman — Project Boat — $9,900
This early-production 1953 Chris-Craft 17’ Sportsman (Hull #378) is a classic mahogany utility from one of the most iconic American boatbuilders. Built during the first run of this model (1953–1955), this boat features its original Chris-Craft Model K engine and retains much of its vintage character.
The Sportsman was known for its wide beam, full front bench seating, and timeless lines. This particular example is a project boat that has had some mechanical and cosmetic work done over the years, but it is not currently in running condition.
Key Features:
- 17’ Mahogany Chris-Craft Sportsman
- Hull #378 of 1,031 built (1953–1955)
- Original Chris-Craft KBL Triple Carb Engine
- Natural wood hull with blonde deck king plank (original styling)
- Full-width front bench (not split seat)
- Trailer included – suitable for local use, needs attention for long-distance towing
Why It’s Special:
This is a true piece of American boating history. As one of the earlier hulls built in 1953, this Sportsman represents the postwar design era that defined mid-century Chris-Craft style — natural mahogany, blonde deck accents, and signature craftsmanship. The original M Model K engine adds to the authenticity and collector appeal. With its compact size and elegant proportions, the 17’ Sportsman remains one of the most sought- after vintage utilities for restoration, small lake cruising, or show boat potential.
Condition Notes:
- Fuel tank is currently removed and sitting in the cockpit
- Fuel pump is off the engine and included in a box
- Missing seat cushions (not currently in boat or found elsewhere)
- Minor damage in cockpit from fuel tank movement during transport
- Trailer has been repaired (hitch latch), but right rear wheel wobbles and all bearings should be checked before road use
This is a great candidate for restoration, with early hull provenance, the original powerplant, and a clean vintage profile.
