Description

“Thomas E. Colvin designed “Tamarack” Schooner

The S/V DEL VIENTO is a 1975 auxiliary sailing schooner with major re-fit in 2012!

Major re-fit done in 2012:

  • Hull cleaned out and all aluminum sealed.
  • Interior was pained with epoxy.

aluthane primer, and two coats of epoxy paint.

  • Re-foamed all of the hull plates.

  • All interior wood was refinished and replaced.

  • Forward head bulkhead was moved aft a few

inches to allow space for an Origo alcohol stove with room for six one gallon can of alcohol.

  • New water tanks were built of plywood and epoxy and installed forward of the previous tanks.

  • Previous water tankage area was made into under bunk storage.
  • Installed composting toilet.
  • In the former starboard aft cabin hanging lockers: Shore power

isolation box, and a 3000 watt charger/inverter with two 115 volt outlet boxes.

  •

Portside aft cabin hanging locker: space for 4 G2 batteries (since replaced by lithium.) and other storage for

    tools, navigation equipment, etc.

  • New 25 hp Beta Marine engine on new engine mounts.
    • entirely electrically isolated from the hull.

  • 6 gallon day tank that is fed from the two original fuel tanks.

    • Transferring fuel to the day tank allows monitoring fuel consumption since there is no fuel gauge.

  • Regular Packing gland
  • Standing rigging replaced with dyneema that was parceled and

served like the original galvanized wire.

  • Replaced staysail.

  • Added roller reefing genoa.

  • New fore sail, topsail, and fisherman sail.

  • 2024 renewed the copper epoxy bottom paint.

Hull and Construction:

  • Hull: The hull is made from welded aluminum, a durable and lightweight material that is resistant to corrosion. It has a urethane paint finish to protect against the elements.
  • Deck: The deck is also made of aluminum, with an anti-skid surface in key areas for safety. It features a urethane paint finish.
  • Keel: The vessel has an integral welded aluminum long keel, with internal lead ballast, offering stability and improved performance under sail. The keel is coated with anti-fouling paint for protection.
  • Rudder: The rudder is constructed from welded aluminum and is attached to the keel with a stainless steel post. It is also protected with anti-fouling paint.
  • Condition: The hull, keel, and rudder are in very good condition, with no corrosion or damage detected.

Exterior Layout:

  • Deck Features:
    • Del Viento has a large bowsprit at the front, which supports the anchor control system with a double roller system and chain locker.
    • Lifelines: Aluminum tubular stanchions with synthetic fiber lifelines.
    • Companionways: Two raised companionways for access to the interior.
    • Aft Cockpit: The cockpit is spacious with seating and features a wheel for steering, navigation instruments, engine controls, and storage. Sail control lines are routed to the cockpit for easy handling.
  • Safety Features: The deck includes safety handholds, adequate cleats for docking, and boarding gates on both sides.

Interior Layout:

  • Salon: Located forward below deck, the salon has settee/berths that provide seating and additional storage. A large deck hatch ensures good ventilation and provides emergency egress.
  • Head: The head (bathroom) is located on the starboard side and features a composting toilet.
  • Galley: The galley is on the port side and includes a 2-burner marine alcohol stove, stainless steel sink, chest refrigerator, and plenty of storage and work surfaces.
  • Aft Cabin: The aft cabin has settee/berths and ample storage. There are two companionways, one leading forward to the engine room and the other leading directly to the cockpit.
  • Engine Room: Located below the forward companionway, it is well-insulated with easy access for maintenance.
  • Ventilation: The interior is well-ventilated with opening ports, dorade vents, and hatches.

The interior is cozy and functional, with a well-equipped galley and ample sleeping space.
