Robert Perry’s genius for designing cruising sailboats is evident in the Valiant 47’, which is one of his most respected projects. Her load carrying capability is excellent and she is fast.

The owners of “SASSY SONJA” are moving to Ecuador and thus, “SASSY SONJA” has been priced to expedite a swift sale and is docked conveniently near Galveston, Texas and can be inspected at any time. The owner logs all major maintenance in the boats log, which is available when inspecting “SASSY SONJA”

If the vision of a purposeful, bluewater double ender comes to mind, when you’re dreaming of other latitudes, a tropical island, the lure of a sheltered anchorage by a hidden beach; if you’re looking for a real honest-to-goodness, no nonsense liveaboard cruising yacht, then you must take time to fully evaluate “SASSY SONJA”. “SASSY SONJA” has only had 4 owners and is one of only fewer than 17 Valiant 47’s to have been built.

If you’re still undecided…then come and have an onboard look at this Robert Perry designed double ender. Not until you step aboard do you always realize just how agreeable a yacht can be…easy to work or play on….fantastic storage for a yacht of this size…an excellent live aboard-passagemaking yacht, easily managed by a couple, that will keep you safe, dry and take you  wherever you may dream.  She has shippy lines, including a sweet double end and a safe, comfortable and accommodating cockpit. Step below & the interior impresses you with traditional elements and timeless qualities available to the cruising enthusiast.

“SASSY SONJA”  is the perfect boat for the cruising couple with less than $150,000 to spend and you will not find a better prepared example of a double ended passagemaker in this size range, at this extremely attractive price, designed purpose ready for you, at an incredible value.

This well kept, 4th owner yacht, is “correct” from the top of her cutter rig to the bottom of her cruising keel…equipped and outfitted as a circumnavigator, easily maintained & sailed by 2 people.

This sturdy double ender boasts both seaworthiness and ample interior space and offers steady and comfortable cruising. Below the water line, the hull incorporates a fine entry with a long cutaway forefoot, followed by a skeg hung rudder.  Comprehensively equipped, she has an equipment inventory that lets you move aboard & begin your cruise ... she’s ready to take you on the voyage of a lifetime.

The more you know about what goes into the creation of a great cruising boat, the more you’ll appreciate this one.  Give the listing broker a call today to discuss this once in a lifetime opportunity to own a world renown, turnkey, NON-BLISTER world cruiser !!

Valiant 47s have circumnavigated the globe, including a sister ship that completed 2 solo circumnavigations, one of them non-stop, a feat that few production yachts have EVER accomplished.  Known by world class sailors as an amazing and remarkable vessel, the Valiant 47’ gained fame when in 1990, William Pinkney (Capt. Bill Pinkney), solo circumnavigated, becoming the fourth person to sail solo around the world aboard a Valiant 47, his being named "COMMITMENT."

“SASSY SONJA” is easy to single-hand, making it ideal for couples. With its fin keel and long forefoot, it tracks straight and is easily steered by autopilot or wind vane steering. The long forefoot also ensures smooth tacking through the wind. Designer Robert Perry praised the Valiant 47's sharp entry and preferred it over the 42 for this reason.

Below deck, this beautiful boat sleeps up to six people in accommodations with the V-Berth, main salon and aft Captains Quarters. Like all Valiants, the main salon settees and the aft Captains Quarters, make excellent offshore sleeping quarters. The interior of the Valiant 47’ is dry and comfortable.

Accommodations are well-planned for comfortable voyaging, and perfectly suited for a couple living aboard.

ACCOMMODATIONS & LAYOUT:

With over 6’6” headroom in the salon and 6’4” headroom everywhere, “SASSY SONJA” is a yacht that works well for tall sailors and those who appreciate a sense of space

“SASSY SONJA” provides a gracious lifestyle for extended periods aboard for even the crew or long term guests.

The interior of “SASSY SONJA” features a unique tri-cabin layout with large forward and aft staterooms and a spacious central salon, each stateroom has an adjoining head compartment with separate shower, an unusual and much sought after accommodation for a yacht of this size

Beginning forward, aft of the chain locker, the forward stateroom utilizes virtually the full beam of the yacht for an exceptionally open and room layout. There are 2 opening ports and a large overhead hatch for great light and ventilation.

With a centerline style queen V-berth, handy changing seat,  and lockers and numerous other detailed amenities, including a hanging locker with shelves to port and the guest head with stall shower aft to starboard, your guests will essentially have their own private and comfortable accommodations. This head compartment also serves as a day head with direct access from the saloon.

Next aft, is the open and inviting main salon which encompasses the full beam of the yacht with a straight bench settee to starboard and an “L” shaped settee to port. A large centerline twin, drop leaf dining table affords intimate dining for 4 or with both leaves up and open, comfortable and enjoyable dining for 6.

There are bookshelves, lockers and abundant storage above and outboard of the settees. As with all Valiant’s, the settee berths make comfortable sleeping areas. Both settees are equipped with lee cloths for safe and secure offshore berths. Overhead is a large opening hatch, 4 opening ports and multiple overhead lights, which are almost exclusively LED, and brass bulkhead reading lights. You’ll note a total of FOUR 12volt fans throughout “SASSY SONJA”. There is a great entertainment system with a 19” flat screen TV and also the 16k BTU Dometic reverse cycle, A/C-Heat Pump is located in the forward hanging locker, with ducts in the main saloon and V-Berth.

Settee upholstery is a light “sea foam” blue and was replaced in 2011. The cabin sole throughout is of the finest teak and holly that the Valiant Yachts builders, have always taken such pride in. “SASSY SONJA’S” teak and holly sole was beautifully refinished in 2015.

The navigation station is to starboard and is a proper offshore, forward facing nav is the forward facing navigation station with comfortable seat and full size lift top desk. It is located just forward of the companionway for quick accessibility and ready communication from the cockpit and helmsperson.

All instruments, radios and navigation data displays are property laid out and there is a handy bookshelf adjacent to the main custom Valiant electrical breaker panel found on “SASSY SONJA”. The Valiant 47’ nav station, is truly the ship’s command center. There is ample space for charts under the nav station lid, a 2-shelved storage locker outboard. The bench type nav station seat has a  locker underneath to provide an additional large storage area.

Aft of the nav station, you will note, 2-lockers, one large shelf top for pantry use or tool and spare parts storage, the other a large full-length wet locker. Following aft and immediately next to the companionway stairs to starboard, there is a large, soundproof insulated door which opens to a custom built storage area, which has shelf over the door, for quick access from the companionway, to flashlights, keys, air horn, suntan lotion, and all the little things that your crew  like to keep handy.
Aft of the main salon and to port, is the classic “wrap around” offshore safe, designed galley, that will delight the gourmet, whether at sea or dockside and is one of the few production yacht galleys that more than one person can work in, at a time.

There is a fiddled storage locker with teak doors, cubby hole storage, and which holds a large bank of additional equipment and boat supplies.

There is excellent counter space, generous cabinet storage, deep double stainless steel sinks on centerline, 3-burner Dickinson gimbaled, Stainless Steel propane stove with oven and broiler, hot & cold pressure water, oversized top loading refrigeration and freezer space,   and abundant storage capacity in lockers, cupboards with sliding doors, 4 drawers just to the right of the stove, and a pan storage locker under the gimballed stove.

Also, the engine compartment is located on centerline, under the galley sinks.  There is ample access to both the port and starboard sides of the engine….NO CRAWLING INTO AN AREA UNDER THE COCKPIT, NOR TRYING TO SERVICE AN ENGINE IN THE BILGE AREA….”SASSY SONJA’S” engine access if enviable by knowledgeable offshore sailors!!!

To Port and just aft of the galley is the large double, Pullman style, Captains, Master Stateroom, with drawers below and abundant storage in lockers inboard, beneath the companionway. The ensuite, 2nd head, boasts a separate shower with fiberglass molded-in seat, vanity with washbasin, toilet, medicine cabinet and additional storage, and is just forward of the berth, accessed from the the Captains Stateroom, which gives complete privacy to the entire Master Stateroom

This roomy stateroom is the perfect “offshore passage” berth, as it’s comfortable on any angle of heel and it is close enough to the cockpit that the on-watch helmsperson can easily communicate with a crewmember there, if necessary.

There is also access to the battery storage and electrical compartment under the cockpit.

Light and air are provided by 13 opening cabin trunk ports, 6 opening deck hatches with replaced Lexan, and four dorade ventilators. This is augmented by a Dometic Marineair 16btu reverse cycle A/C-Heat Pump with ducts in the saloon and V-Berth. The V-berth can be turned off.

Galley

The galley is configured to be secure in a seaway, while providing an abundance of space for adventurous culinary endeavors. The “U” shaped galley is very well laid out and there’s plenty of room for 2 chefs working at one time.

ABOVE DECK, DECK HARDWARE & SAFETY:

Cruising proven, modified fin keel, full skeg supported rudder and rounded canoe stern. The hull is a one piece unit, hand laid in a female mold with alternating layers of woven roving and chopped strand mat in premium quality resin throughout. Closed cell foam insulation is applied behind ceilings from below the waterline to the sheer to prevent condensation. There is a ¾ length teak rub strake fitted to both sides of the yacht.

Topsides of “SASSY SONJA” features a large unobstructed deck and cabin top. The deck is also built in a female mold and has a balsa core for strength and rigidity as well as improved thermal and acoustical insulation properties. This is substituted in high stress areas (winch bases, etc.) with solid fiberglass. Hull and deck are joined at the raised bulwark, topped with a teak cap rail and mechanically and chemically bonded with stainless steel bolts and 5200 for a high strength, leak free joint. Safe & secure deck work is ensured with raised bulwarks, premium nonskid, full length cabintop handrails, double bow and stern rails and double lifelines. The roomy cockpit has contoured seats with deep coaming backrests, a comfortable helmsman’s seat with cavernous lazerettes under the Lift-top seats. Solid marine plywood bulkheads all bonded to the hull sides.

The propane tanks are stored in the Port and Starboard cockpit lockers.

FROM THE ORIGINAL V47 BROCHURE

The new Valiant 47 is the ultimate combination of the attributes required to maximize safety, performance, and comfort. All are brought together in an elegant, high performance yacht of exceptional quality and style--THE NEW VALIANT 47.

QUOTATIONS: "Fine balance, good acceleration and the ability to 'shoot' fair distances to windward on each tack before paying off on the new heading."

"Tracking was good and the feeling of power most satisfactory."

"Even in hard going (it was now blowing about 25, gusting 35) our heavy hunter could be controlled on a light rein."

     "Acceleration was noteworthy."

"The coamings are high and curved to fit the back, the seats wide and also shaped. The distance between them is just right for 'feet up' bracing when heeled."

"Although the vessel gives the impression of being heavily constructed and is very powerful, her dead weight of 30,000 pounds cannot be described as 'heavy displacement.' This is borne out by her effortless performance, particularly in light air."

SUMMARY: The above quotations represent a few of the just raves showered upon the Valiant 47 by experienced yachtsmen. She demonstrates "lively performance for a cruising boat, typical of Bob Perry's designs." Compared with the very successful Valiant 40, the 47 shows a flatter bilge curve and a more cutaway forefoot; both of which contribute to quick response and maintenance of speed on tacking. She is a "well-designed, soundly constructed, ruggedly-rigged lady; a vehicle for long range ocean cruising in both comfort and safety. What is more, she does not waste time!"

A high-aspect cutter rig with all control lines led aft to the cockpit gives the Valiant 47 plenty of sail power while keeping things simple enough for a competent couple to manage and maintain even under strenuous conditions, and in absolute luxury and safety
