Boat Details

Description

The Gatsby 39 is truly a remarkable vessel. Her traditional lines and great joinery work are a real eye catcher. Designer, Backus, and developer, Hoyt, have done a remarkable job. The basic philosophy of the boat is round-the-clock comfort and luxury for two. Her pilothouse is situated with 360 degree visibility and has all the traditional details, giving her the feeling of a little ship. Her current owner easily cruises from Florida to New England single-handedly. Her range under power is quite impressive. At 7 knots she will go 490nm with a 10% reserve powered by a Yanmar 4JH-HTE 66HP turbo-charged diesel.

Starting at the bow, the forward bulkhead forms a storage wall for books,TV and VCR. This cabin has a very warm, comfortable feeling and is the main entertainment area. There is abundant cabinet and storage space and the high quality joinery work and bronze fittings are evident throughout. These vessels were built in the same shipyard as the famed Hans Christian yachts. The galley is U-shaped and features holding-plate refrigeration, double stainless sink and a Force 10 three-burner gimbaled ship's stove with oven. The salon and galley area provide an open, spacious and comfortable setting. The engine room is easily accessible through deck hatches in the pilothouse and behind the stairway descending to the galley. Moving aft to the master stateroom in the companionway, one finds several hanging lockers, a workbench and side access to the master head. The master stateroom features a beautiful centerline 60" X 80" queen sized bed. This cabin is very well ventilated and has good natural lighting provided by two large ports mounted in the transom above the bed. There is a vanity dresser and mirror, several good lockers and a private door leading to the spacious head and shower area with built in washer and dryer. Overall, she is in excellent condition, well fitted out, and ready to go cruising.

Accommodations

The pilothouse features all teak bulkheads and joinery beautifully finished in a satin varnish. Down below, the Gatsby recreates the feeling and appearance of vintage yachts with toungue and groove bulkheads and overhead, finished in white, accented with highly varnished teak corner posts, ceiling beams and trim. This scheme gives a delightfully bright and cheerful nautical appearance. Drawers, shelving, locker doors and trim are all in teak, executed with lavish care and skill exemplifying the very best in Far Eastern boatbuilding joinery. The aft cabin features a lovely queen sized 60"x 80" centerline berth with four drawer storage underneath. This cabin is very well lit with two large fixed ports aft of the master berth. The joinery work throughout the vessel is very impressive and gives one a feeling of fine old world craftsmanship. Separate storage compartments with hinged access doors are along both sides. There is a marble topped vanity with two drawers and two clothes lockers on the starboard side. The port side has a vanity dresser, a clothes locker, cosmetic locker, makeup mirror and a marble topped vanity with large drawer and pivoting swing-out vanity seat. There is also a built-in bookcase and shelving areas on both port and starboard. The master head is accessible from the companionway or aft stateroom. It has a stainless steel sink with marble countertop. There is storage in mirrored medicine chest and behind the louvered door under the sink. The toilet is a top of the line Headhunter Royal Flush full sized unit. The shower compartment is accessible from the stateroom and is of fiberglass construction with a teak seat. There is an opening panel for access to a 55gal holding tank. Moving forward down the companionway, on the starboard side of the vessel, one finds a separate access door to the master head, many storage compartments, two hanging lockers, a nice work bench and side access to the engine room located under the pilothouse. Upon entering the galley area, on the starboard side is an extraordinary leaded, cut glass china cabinet (backlighted) with a marble topped buffet with brass fiddles, three drawers and four cabinets below. The galley has a marvelously built in holding plate refrigeration system with traditional ice box and freezer doors with all brass hardware. This system is air and water cooled by Technicold. There are over five feet of ceramic countertops with large, deep, double, stainless steel sink with hot/cold faucet and spray, and fresh/salt water foot pumps. Out board and to port, is a stainless lined stove locker with gimbaled Force 10 model #60350 3-burner stove with oven, broiler and bronze griddle utilizing a Marinetics LPG saftey switch. Panasonic Junior 600 watt microwave is built in above the refrigerator. The galley has six storage cabinets above the countertop and stove areas with indirect lighting. There is also a retractable cutting board, five galley drawers and storage area under the range. There is a convienient lift out stainless steel disposal area and counter access to a large corner storage. Moving forward from the galley into the salon area one has a very warm and comfortable feeling. This is the vessel's main entertainment and dining area. The forward bulkhead forms a storage wall for books. The main salon has a large 23"x48" stationary teak table with teak fiddle and solid brass base, easily accomodating four. Salon settees will easily seat eight or more comfortably. All seating has "rolled" front foam cushions, and all cushions aboard are covered with Scotchguard treated top-grade heavy velour, in a rich "dusty" maroon color. There are built-in end tables on port/starboard with marble tops and brass fiddles. Bookshelves on port/starboard have indirect lighting. The lighted workbench, with storage lockers above, is located on the starboard side of companionway. Traditional teak and holly sole throughout adds to the salty atmosphere . She has ten sole hatches for access into bilge and storage areas. Note: More than 12 feet of marble countertops, 31 feet of brass fiddles, and 16 feet of large diameter brass tubing are located strategically throughout the vessel to enhance the traditional appearance and functional usage of cabinetry, shelving, footrails, and handrails. Over 28 feet of bookshelf space is available throughout this fine vessel.

Construction

Hand-laminated fiberglass with alternating layers of mat and roving. Eighteen layers waterline to rail, twenty layers keel to waterline, and twenty four layers in keel. All laminates are polyester resin with gel coated exterior surfaces. Half inch polyurethane is bonded and glassed inside the hull above the waterline for thermal and sound insulation. Decks are sandwich-core construction with half inch end grain balsa for insulation. Chain plates and metal backing plates for cleats and winches are glassed in. Decks and aft coach roof top are teak imbedded in Thiokol. Pilothouse top was rebuilt with 1" closed cell foam insulation in 2023. Through-hull fittings are all lever type bronze seacocks with wire bonding for electrolysis control. Large full length teak rubrails are fitted with bronze face caps to protect the vessel's topsides.  The entire vessel was repainted from waterline up with Allgrip stark white paint in 2013.
