CONSTRUCTION AND HISTORY
Cold molded composite construction combines the advantage of wood (sound proofing and interior temperature control) and fiberglass exterior (ease of maintenance). The Barratucci yard built custom boats in Long Beach using entirely the cold molded method. AQUILA was originally launched as the 107’ MARIPOSA. Her next owner was a longtime and well-respected yachtsman in Seattle who renamed her GLORY. He lengthened the hull from 107’ to 112’ by adding a 5’ fiberglass cockpit extension, thus creating the outstanding (visually and functionality) cockpit. Sold in 2002 to an avid Southern Californian sportfisherman looking for adventure, she was renamed STEADFAST and cruised extensively to remote fishing grounds: Alaska to Chile and on the East Coast and Caribbean. In 2020 she was sold to the current owner, an experienced yachtsman and renamed AQUILA. He and his family have enjoyed cruising Mexico and Southern California waters. There is no question that AQUILA has proven her capabilities.
AQUILA’s hull is of diagonal triple planked marine grade plywood that is both mechanically fastened with bronze screws and glued and laminated to 4” marine grade plywood traverse bulkheads and massive 5 1/2” (W) X 20”-30” (H) laminated marine grade plywood longitudinal stringers that provide considerable strength to the yacht’s structure. Hull bottom thickness is at least 1 7/8”. There are three watertight doors. The exterior surface is sheathed in fiberglass cloth. Teak is covering the cockpit and aft deck. Side decks and upper decks are painted non-skid. The entire boat is painted with linear polyurethane paint.
