53-23 OSTRA A - AVAILABLE

The second Oyster model designed by Rob Humphreys, the 53 is the little sister to the hugely successful Oyster 56, and an outstanding success in its own right, with fifty-two launched between 1999 and 2008.

Renowned for being fast, well balanced, superb in poor weather and simple to handle, the 53, and in particular Ostra A is a fantastic Oyster that we are delighted to offer on our brokerage fleet.

Ostra A, 53-23, launched in 2003, is a great example of a yacht that has been configured to deliver. Featuring an upgraded GTI Formula Yacht Spars carbon mast with stainless steel rigging, carbon furlerboom, manual furling headsail with removable inner forestay, spinnaker and jockey pole, and hydraulic backstay tensioners, all of which are complimented by electric primary, mainsheet and halyard winches. Ostra A is equipped to deliver great all-round performance, including regatta success, without compromising on the benefits of her being a fantastic short-handed bluewater cruiser.

Below decks Ostra A offers great versatility and potential capability for long distance cruising with four spacious cabins, the fourth featuring a convenient single cabin/workshop. Despite being the smallest Oyster with a four cabin layout, the fully equipped galley, and spacious entertaining space makes Ostra A feel much bigger than her size. Beautifully appointed in teak with neutral palette tones throughout, she is adaptable and equipped for anything.

Recently upgraded the mast being unstepped and serviced, installation of a complete new navigation and communications suite, new batteries and battery management system, engine and generator servicing, hydraulic passerelle, and recent underwater works including antifouling and necessary seacock replacement, Ostra A is a great offering that is definitely worth viewing.

In late 2018 Ostra A was struck by lightning whilst moored in Mallorca. Oyster Palma in conjunction with insurers Pantaenius and their surveyors oversaw and complete electrics overhaul in early 2019.

Current mooring now secured until June 2025 in one of the most sought after marinas in Mallorca (available via a separate negotiation).


1. CONSTRUCTION 

 

HULL NUMBER

Oyster 53/23.

 

HULL CONSTRUCTION

Moulded in GRP from female moulds built by Oyster in their own facility under the designer’s supervision, ensuring a smooth accurate finish.

Hull and deck structure moulded to designer’s specification under controlled conditions and all laminating carried out by hand to high standard.

Hull and deck mouldings produced using a Lloyd’s approved gelcoat and laminating resin. On the hull the gelcoat and three outer laminates incorporate a special Isophthalic resin and powder-bound mats. The hull is moulded with conventional stringer construction above and below the waterline.

 

HULL FINISH

‘White’ hull with cove line and double boot top lines in ‘navy blue.’

Hull and all GRP polished (2023).

Underwater coating taken back to gel (2012). Re-antifouling every two years. Last re-antifouled with Micron (2023). 

30A galvanic isolator replaced (2019). 

 

DECK CONSTRUCTION

Moulded in GRP with a balsa core for strength and insulation. In load-bearing areas the core is replaced with plywood for additional strength, and all load-bearing fittings have aluminium backing plates.

An eyebrow detail is incorporated within the deck house roof, which combined with recessed windows lowers the apparent height of the main saloon.

 

DECK FINISH

Side decks, forward and aft coachroof, cockpit seats, sole and helmsman’s seat are trimmed with laid teak. Raised parts of teak replaced (2021).

Hull to deck connection is achieved by the deck sitting on a return flange moulded into the hull, which forms a raised bulwark with teak capping rail. The deck edge incorporates three pairs of internal scupper drains.

Deck saloon roof painted with ‘white’ non-slip deck paint forward of the sprayhood rail. Beneath the sprayhood teak deck planking is laid.

 

KEEL

High performance bulb (HPB) external lead keel.

 

RUDDER

Fully protected skeg-hung rudder.

 

STERN DESIGN

‘Sugar scoop’ stern design that incorporates a platform instep which is specially useful for bathing and boarding and is trimmed with teak slats. This area includes a fold-down stainless steel bathing/boarding ladder with teak treads and two stainless steel steps with teak treads for access to the stern deck.

Built to comply with the requirements for Category A – Ocean.


2. DECK LAYOUT AND EQUIPMENT

32kg (70lb) Delta anchor that self-stows in the stemhead fitting, with 60m (196’) of 12mm galvanised chain.

Fortress FX37 lightweight kedge anchor with 100m (328’) Octoplait warp and 5m (16’) of chain.

Spare 34kg (75lb) CQR anchor.

Recessed locker within the foredeck for anchor chain stowage, which is fitted with hinged lids and chrome flush-fitting type locking devices.

4. INTERIOR

 

GENERAL

 Seven berths in four cabins, excluding the saloon. Sea berths, including the aft double have Dacron lee screens fitted with lanyards to through-bolted eyes.

Interior joinery finished in teak, Millennium style.

Designed to be modern and coordinated, whilst remaining practical and durable at sea. Essential features include sculpted fiddles and grab rails, ‘shadow-gap’ joints between joinery panels, solid shaped teak and stainless steel grab handles, and Oyster custom knobs for lockers and drawers.

Doors with centre section and Avonite inlay. Door furniture by Timage with chrome hinges and handles.

Cabin sole in ‘chequerboard’ style teak with ‘black’ Avonite inlay. Fitted carpets throughout with anti-static, anti-allergen and anti-asthmatic/dust-free properties.

Lockers fitted with teak shelves and fiddles, as appropriate. All drawers use metal runners, which give extremely smooth operation.

All galley horizontal work surfaces are finished in ‘Gibraltar Grey’ Avonite with upstands.

Two head compartments each fitted out with a ‘white’ washbasin set under a flat solid ‘Limestone’ Avonite surface, finished in teak and ‘Cream Velour’ laminate. Hansgrohe quality mixer taps and shower hardware installed, together with matching towel rail, pair of toothbrush holders, soap dish, and toilet roll holder, in each head compartment.

Headlining in ‘off-white’ vinyl, which is also used to cover the deck saloon sides. Hull ports are set into GRP liner mouldings.

‘Cream’ Alcantara upholstery throughout.

Curtain system to windows in all cabins.

Metal flyscreens to all opening Gebo hull ports in topsides, and Gebo coachroof portlights.

Oceanair Skyscreens to all deck hatches.

 

FORWARD DOUBLE CABIN

 Spacious double cabin in the bow with centreline double berth, and stowage beneath. Upholstered seat with vanity table, plentiful clothes lockers and a hanging locker.

Access to deck via fore hatch.

 

SHARED HEAD/DAY HEAD

 Large head compartment to port, shared by forward cabins and accessed from the passageway, incorporating a Jabsco manual toilet, washbasin, and separate curtained shower stall.

Lockers for wash bag, cleaning materials, and linen stowage. Mirror.

 

STARBOARD FORWARD TWIN CABIN

 Twin cabin situated aft of the forward cabin to starboard, with upper and lower berths, lockers for clothes, vanity unit, and a hanging locker.

 

SALOON

 Access to the saloon from the cockpit is via a set of teak and stainless steel steps, with teak and stainless steel hand rails.

The saloon is extremely light and airy with seven windows, of which two of the three forward ones open. In addition, there are two opening hull ports.

Featuring an oval table and settee area to starboard, outboard of which is a pair of lockers and central bookshelf to the hull port with stainless steel rods. To port is a two-seater settee, with trotter box and lee cloth for use as an occasional berth.

The saloon table is designed to form, in its closed position, an occasional table, which is mounted on a very substantial pedestal, incorporating a bottle locker in its base.

The tabletop face is veneered in burr elm wood with a ‘cream’ inlaid perimeter line and solid timber edging, in a matt finish. This table opens to form a large dining table. Vinyl saloon table cover.

Drinks locker with automatic door light at forward port end of saloon, to accommodate bottle and glass stowage.

Central overhead grab rail fitted in headlining.

 

NAVIGATION/CHART TABLE AREA

 Situated at the aft port end of the saloon the chart table area is customised around the electronics and navigation equipment that is flush mounted in a matt ‘black’ man-made leather fascia, and strategically sited for optimum viewing.

Stainless steel stay fitted to chart table lid. The chart table can accommodate a half-folded Admiralty chart and there is provision provided for stowage of charts.

Bookshelf outboard. Stowage for navigational books and almanacs.

AC and DC electrical panels located aft of the navigator’s seat.

 

PORT AFT CABIN/WORKSHOP

 Single berth cabin/workshop aft of the saloon to port, situated below the cockpit, with workbench and stowage.

Cupboard on shower bulkhead houses twin Racor filter system, with stainless steel drip tray beneath, and watermaker.

Large hinged doors provide access to the engine compartment.

 

ENGINE ROOM

 Insulated with a foam and lead insulation using foam with twin lead sheets sandwiched between it. Accessed via removable panels fitted with rubber sealing strips to minimise noise and secured by positive catches.

24V lighting and 24V extractor fan, switched at the DC electrical panel. The fan is designed to be used after the engine has been shutdown to evacuate hot air from the engine space, not to be run continuously. Automatic fire extinguisher installed.

 

GALLEY

 Situated starboard of the cockpit, in the passageway to the aft cabin, where panels provide access to the engine compartment.

Avonite work surfaces with upstands. Large rubbish bin fitted inside locker door adjacent to twin sinks. Ample storage lockers, plus stowage for crockery and cutlery.

Oilskin hanging locker built into the aft end of the engine room space.

 

SINKS 

 Twin sinks in stainless steel.

 

WATER FILTER

 Charcoal filter system on galley cold water supply with manual pump at sink.

 

COOKER/HOB

 Gimballed stainless steel Force 10 cooker with four-burners, oven and grill. All protected by a flame failure gas cut-off device.

The cooker incorporates an electronic ignition system for all functions. Heavy gauge fiddle rail fitted around top of cooker, which incorporates a pair of adjustable clamping pan holders. Harbour lock and cooker crash bar fitted.

 

MICROWAVE/GRILL

 AEG Micromat Duo (900W) stainless steel microwave oven and grill.

 

REFRIGERATOR/FREEZER

 Frigomatic 24V (water-cooled) refrigeration unit to cool front opening refrigerator built into galley aft, with automatic door light, and fitted out with shelves.

Super Frigomatic 50F freezer system, with twin compressors and evaporator plates to cool insulated top-opening cool box fitted forward, to provide fridge or freezer capability. Fitted with baskets for food stowage and a small strut to support the freezer lid.

 

OWNER’S STATEROOM

 Configured with a double berth offset from centreline, fitted with a high quality proprietary battening system beneath foam mattresses to give excellent comfort with additional flexibility.

Curved settee, dressing table, and a large hanging locker with abundant drawer and locker space.

Access to en suite aft head to port. Door to starboard leads to galley.

 Hot and cold freshwater system based on a high capacity water pump with pressure accumulator tank, and Acorn polypropylene pipework and fittings.

 

HOLDING TANKS 

 Plastic (polypropylene) toilet holding tank (approximately 40 litres) installed to forward head, plumbed for gravity discharge, with additional ability to pump out from deck, and fitted with Wema electric capacity gauge.

 

GREY WATER

 Showers and washbasins discharge into two sump tanks (approximately 20 litres), one forward and one aft, which then evacuate via a dedicated electric Whale ‘Gulper’ pump directly overboard.

The galley sink also empties via an electric Whale ‘Gulper’ pump.

These three pumps are each operated by rubber toggle switches.

 

SEACOCKS

 All seacocks are quarter-turn ball valves with bronze through-hull fittings.
