OYSTER 575 RUM DIARY - AVAILABLE

The Oyster 575 was designed by Rob Humphreys and the Oyster Design Team to replace the Oyster 56, which had been our most

The Oyster 575 was designed by Rob Humphreys and the Oyster Design Team to replace the Oyster 56, which had been our most popular model. Built on owners’ feedback, the 575 was designed and engineered as a direct replacement – a long range, ocean-going, bluewater cruiser and liveaboard, which can be easily handled by a couple. The 575 has a longer waterline length, deeper keel, increased sail area, and fuel tankage. She feels like a ‘bigger’ yacht, with more headroom and a beam that is carried further aft, enhancing off-wind performance, and allowing a more spacious owner’s stateroom. The biggest upgrades and biggest steps forward were to the cockpit, which features twin wheels, a centreline walkway aft, and distinct working and relaxing areas ideal for children or non-sailors whilst underway.

The first 575 was launched in 2010 and a total of 41 were launched when production ceased in 2018. The 575 is a proven circumnavigator and consummate ocean cruiser, which offered three different keel options, a standard deep draft, a fixed shoal keel and a ‘super shoal’ lifting keel. There is also an Extended Transom version, which replaces the sugar scoop with a counter stern, allowing a huge lazarette and deck space aft. Most 575s are rigged as cutters, with a few sloops. Oyster’s fifth-generation deck saloon design gives the 575 an attractive profile at sea. She is well-mannered and reassuring, comfortable in all conditions, and with a turn of speed that will keep the most demanding sailor fully engaged.

A beautiful late model 575 with a light grey hull, Rum Diary is fully equipped for world cruising. She has perhaps the simplest and most versatile rig Oyster produced, with hydraulic push button furling to her mainsail, genoa and staysail, all controlled from the safety of the cockpit. Her lifting keel reduces her draft to just 1.65m (5’5’’) giving access to shallow water anchorages and harbours or simply allows much shorter dinghy trips to the beach. A light and bright interior finished in limed oak, and complemented by natural light flooding in from her deck saloon and seascape windows make for a very pleasant experience below deck, where she sleeps up to seven in four cabins.

Recently arrived in Annapolis, MD, USA, and available for viewing at any convenient time.

OWNERS’ COMMENTS

“Since purchasing Rum Diary in early 2023, we’ve had the most incredible adventure aboard this exceptional yacht. We sailed from Ipswich to the Mediterranean, where we spent an unforgettable season exploring the Balearic Islands. From there, we embarked on a thrilling transatlantic crossing, followed by an entire Caribbean season discovering the stunning island chain.

After a summer spent in Annapolis for a major refit following a lightning strike, Rum Diary has emerged stronger than ever. Now back in the Caribbean, this yacht is ready for new adventures. Whether you’re looking to continue your cruising dreams or embark on your first ocean voyage, Rum Diary offers the perfect opportunity for a discerning buyer to step aboard a meticulously maintained, ocean-ready vessel.

She’s equipped for long-haul journeys and has been lovingly cared for throughout her travels. This is your chance to own a yacht that’s been designed for true adventurers and ready to take on whatever the open sea throws at her!”

1. CONSTRUCTION

HULL NUMBER

Oyster 575/30.

HULL CONSTRUCTION

The hull is a composite construction, moulded using a combination of vinylester and polyester resin with the outer topside finish in a white special NPG gelcoat.

Laminate material comprises a combination of E-Glass, Kevlar, and Carbon Fibre specially designed for the yacht by the Oyster Design Team’s own structural engineers. This custom laminate offers significant weight savings, strength and stiffness advantages over a normal GRP construction.

Topside laminate incorporates a high-tech, balsa-cored, E-glass/Carbon sandwich above the waterline, for additional strength, stiffness, and insulation. Below the waterline, the hull features a monolithic (single-skin) composite laminate with an Aramid/Kevlar layer, reinforced with a matrix of stringers and floors.

Combined with BS1088 standard marine-ply structural bulkheads, this produces a robust structure, with excellent strength to weight qualities and proven longevity. Additional reinforcements are included in the way of the keel recess, the keel longitudinals, mast bulkhead, P-bracket, forestay, and hull stringers.

Limber holes and/or tubes are installed at appropriate points. Stringers, bulkhead landings, and floors are formed over a non-structural, inert, polyurethane foam.

HULL FINISH

‘Light Grey’ hull with cove line and double boot top lines in ‘White.’

Coppercoat re-applied, 2023.

UltraSonic Ultra 20, new 2024.

DECK CONSTRUCTION

Moulded in GRP with balsa core.

The 575 deck styling has modern flowing lines providing sleek looks, inside and out, whilst maintaining the Oyster trademark and reputation for a light and airy deck saloon.

DECK FINISH

Weather deck, cockpit seats and sole areas finished with quarter-sawn teak planking, laid using epoxy adhesive with no visible fastenings. Recessed GRP trays port and starboard of companionway. Teak on flat areas either side of companionway, around recessed GRP trays, under sprayhood, and on raised section of foredeck.

Fore and aft coachroof tops and cockpit coamings finished in white gelcoat, with white, non-slip deck paint applied to appropriate panels.

The deck edge incorporates a bulwark, which facilitates relatively flat side decks. The top of the bulwark has a clean GRP finish, giving a modern and stylish rolled edge, enhancing the yacht’s visual appearance with a graceful sheer line.

KEEL

Super shoal draft keel with centreboard.

The keel is a long, shallow profile GRP moulded stub with lead ballast bolted to it. Both are made with a central slot that allows the centreboard to swing up inside the lead fin and GRP stub/box. The centreboard keel is designed to combine very shallow draft with good sailing performance.

CENTREBOARD

The centreboard plate is pivoted on a bronze pin and set into a low friction, bearing sleeve. The pivot pin may be removed for maintenance. The pivoting board and lifting mechanism have been designed to minimise risk of serious damage, in the event of hitting an underwater obstruction.

The centreboard plate is raised and lowered by an electrically operated hydraulic ram installed vertically in the engine room compartment. It is connected to the upper trailing edge by Vectran (or similar) line running over bronze large diameter sheaves. Operation of the hydraulic ram is by push-buttons sited at one steering pedestal. There is a ‘Board UP’/’Board DOWN’ position indicator, together with a lift mechanism fail-safe system. Sheaves and lifting line are accessible for removal and maintenance.

NB: The centreboard position must not be adjusted whilst the board is under load, in sailing conditions. The vessel must be slowed to less than 4 knots in order to release sideways pressure from the board, pin, and casing assembly prior to operating the hydraulic lift.

RUDDER

Twin balanced spade rudders each with a substantial glass fibre blade, foam-filled, and bonded to a carbon fibre rudder stock. Each rudder incorporates top and bottom bearings.

The tops of the rudder stocks terminate at deck level and are covered by a screw-in deck plate. This facilitates the use of a stainless steel emergency tiller from a usable position on deck. The emergency tiller has stowage provided within the lazarette locker.

STERN DESIGN

The transom design incorporates a platform instep, which is especially useful for bathing/boarding and is trimmed with laid teak. Two stainless steel steps with teak tread inserts are fixed on the transom for access to the stern deck.

Fold-down stainless steel bathing/boarding ladder with oval rungs, fitted with a lanyard and retaining pin for retrieval/stowage.
