Additional Description:

The 1977 Ericson 27 is a prime example of the timeless appeal of well-built, performance-oriented cruising sailboats. A vessel that is as enjoyable to sail as it is to admire, the Ericson 27 blends classic lines with solid construction and a responsive, easy-to-handle design. Despite being over four decades old, this 27-foot sloop continues to be a favorite among sailors seeking a combination of affordability, solid performance, and classic good looks. Whether you're a first-time buyer looking for a small cruiser or a seasoned sailor in search of a capable day sailor, the Ericson 27 offers an enduring blend of style and substance.

Design and Build: A Proven Performer

The Ericson 27 was designed by the legendary Bruce King, whose designs have become synonymous with reliable, well-balanced performance. The 1977 Ericson 27 features a clean, well-proportioned hull with a moderate displacement, which gives it a smooth, stable ride in a variety of sea conditions. The boat’s fin keel and balanced rudder offer excellent stability and responsive handling, making the Ericson 27 a joy to sail, whether you’re on a weekend jaunt or cruising along the coast.

With a length overall (LOA) of 27 feet and a beam of 8 feet 6 inches, the Ericson 27 strikes a perfect balance between agility and interior space. The shallow draft (around 4 feet) also makes it well-suited for exploring shallow waters and allows it to easily access sheltered coves, bays, and anchorages.

The Ericson 27 is also built to last. The fiberglass hull construction is robust and solid, designed to withstand the test of time. While the boat is small by modern cruising standards, its design and build quality ensure that it remains a reliable companion for sailors seeking a dependable, no-frills cruiser.

Interior: Practical and Cozy

Below deck, the 1977 Ericson 27 offers a surprisingly comfortable and well-thought-out layout for a boat of its size. Though compact, the interior is designed to maximize space, making it ideal for a couple or small family looking for an affordable cruiser.

The main salon features a settee to port and starboard, with a small table that can fold down to create a functional dining or lounging area. There is also storage beneath the seats for gear and provisions, which is essential on a boat of this size.

The forward v-berth provides a cozy sleeping area for two, and there’s additional storage space in the bow for personal belongings or gear. The galley, located to port, is compact but fully functional, with a two-burner stove, a small sink, and a cooler or icebox for food storage. The head, while small, is located aft of the galley and includes a marine toilet, offering basic but essential amenities for longer trips.

Although the 27-foot length means that the interior space is more limited than larger cruisers, the design of the Ericson 27 ensures that every inch is utilized effectively. The warm wood finishes and simple yet functional design create a welcoming atmosphere below deck, making it an enjoyable place to relax after a day of sailing.

Performance: Fun, Responsive, and Easy to Handle

Under sail, the Ericson 27 is a true performer. With a masthead sloop rig, it’s easy to balance and trim the sails for a variety of wind conditions. The boat’s light displacement and responsive steering make it an ideal choice for sailors who enjoy a more active sailing experience. Whether you're cruising along the coast or pushing the boat to its limits in a regatta, the Ericson 27 delivers a fun, exhilarating ride.

Its fin keel provides excellent upwind performance, and the rudder offers a solid, responsive feel at the helm. While it’s not a racing yacht, the Ericson 27 can hold its own in a variety of conditions, and its manageable size makes it an excellent choice for solo sailors or couples. The boat is light enough to be easily handled by two people, and its simplicity means there are fewer systems to maintain—making it an ideal boat for those who want to focus on sailing, not managing a complex set of systems.

With an engine typically in the 8-12 horsepower range, the Ericson 27 has enough power to handle docking and maneuvering in harbors or marinas, as well as getting you to your next destination when the wind dies down.

A Boat That Endures

The 1977 Ericson 27 is more than just a sailboat—it’s a reminder of the craftsmanship and design that went into building yachts that last. Despite its age, this boat continues to deliver reliable performance, and it’s not unusual to see these boats still cruising the coastlines or appearing at regattas today. For sailors looking for a classic boat with timeless appeal, the Ericson 27 is a standout choice.

Its solid build, excellent sailing characteristics, and simple, yet effective interior make it a great option for anyone seeking a small, well-balanced cruiser with a rich history. The Ericson 27 represents an era of yacht design that prioritized practical, user-friendly features and high-quality construction—making it an enduring favorite for sailors of all kinds.
